Written and drawn by John Liney (who also took over the Henry daily strip following Mr. Anderson's death in 1946), these were delightful, pun-filled stories that all ages could enjoy. Here's an original Dell File copy of the first twelve issues, bound for use by Western Publishing. This was originally part of the Random House collection of bound volumes that surfaced around 2004. This particular bound volume is one of the best-looking copies we've seen, with the comics in very nice condition. The book was used by David Tosh to select stories for the 2104 Fantagraphics collection, Henry Speaks For Himself . A copy of that book is included. Comics are trimmed on all three edges, typical of bound volumes. That, plus the exploitative lingerie photo cover of Canadian ice skating star Marty Collins, sealed this comic's status as a highly sought-after collectible. Overstreet says "prices vary widely on this book," and every sale we've seen has substantially eclipsed the Guide value. Everett Raymond Kinstler art. Overstreet 2018 VG 4.0 value = $2,200. [Pep Comics #22 (MLJ, 1941) CGC GD+ 2.5 Cream to off-white pages]( [Pep Comics #22 (MLJ, 1941)]( CGC GD+ 2.5 Cream to off-white pages The first appearance of Archie! This key Golden Age book has been climbing up Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list for years, and currently holds down the #9 position. It's a difficult find in any grade, and even at GD+ 2.5, only a few copies have earned a higher grade from CGC to date. The superhero cover by Irv Novick gives no hint at what makes this issue particularly valuable — inside is the first appearance of Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, and Jughead Jones. Bob Montana handled the Archie art. Overstreet 2018 GD 2.0 value = $27,000. CGC census 10/18: 4 in 2.5, 8 higher. [Back to Top](#top) []Superman, Donald Duck, Alien and Empire in November 17-18 Vintage Poster Auction Our upcoming poster auction has nearly 1,000 lots, and here are a few that jumped out at us from this wonderful catalog! [Superman Cartoon (Paramount, 1941)]( [Superman Cartoon (Paramount, 1941)]( Stock One Sheet (27" X 41") Just after Superman made his dramatic appearance in Action Comics in 1938 and rose quickly to fame, he became the subject of Hollywood speculation. Republic Pictures wanted to turn the "Man of Steel" into a serial, but Paramount got the rights first and decided to create a series of cartoons instead. Under the leadership of Max and Dave Fleischer, Paramount turned out 17 cartoons and those shorts are considered some of the best work to emerge from Paramount's cartoon division. Paramount did not issue individual one sheets for the series, but instead, opted to create this stock one sheet with a blank imprint area where the individual cartoon titles could be written in or printed. Featuring bright colors and several great images of the famed Kryptoninan, this one sheet has been professionally restored to correct fold wear, creases, mild border tears, and pinholes in the interior. There were a few small bits of paper loss in the image area and a tear in the lower left border that extended slightly into the background. Fine/Very Fine on Linen. [The Trial of Donald Duck (RKO, 1948). One Sheet (27' X 41')]( [The Trial of Donald Duck (RKO, 1948)]( One Sheet (27" X 41") Poor Donald Duck tries to eat his lunch in the park, but things never go as planned for Walt Disney's hapless waterfowl. It starts to rain on his picnic, so he heads to Chez Pierre for a cup of coffee, which ends up costing him $35.99, a whopping $382.66 in today's dollars! With only a nickel to his name, he is put on trial and ordered to wash dishes for ten days. Early Duck posters have always been scarce and this is no exception. Professional restoration has addressed fold wear and separations, pinholes into the interior, as well as chipping and tears in the borders and folds. There were a few tape stains in the folds and the borders have been airbrushed, giving the poster a neat finish. Fine+ on Linen [Alien (20th Century Fox, 1979). Marler Haley British Quads (2) & Double Crowns (4) (30' X 40')]( [Alien (20th Century Fox, 1979)]( Marler Haley British Quads (2) & Double Crowns (4) (30" X 40"). For the ultimate collector on Ridley Scott's Alien, Heritage is proud to offer possibly the rarest posters ever issued on this landmark science fiction film. In advance of the film's release, the studio contacted Marler Haley in England to produce a unique display. Marler Haley were known for their promotional materials ranging from banners to full size standees, and so for Alien they created this set of six posters (two quads and four double crowns), to be used separately or all together into one larger display poster. The two quads were printed with a day-glo green to attract the patrons eyes, while the smaller double crowns consisted of ten scenes telling a little of the film.s plot. Featured in the scenes are Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver and Yaphet Kotto, and another scene features the Alien "space jockey" designed by Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger. What isn't shown is the real "star" of the film; the Alien creature itself. The studio didn't want the creature designed by Giger shown on any of the film's original advertising material and spoil the shock of seeing it in the movie. The double crowns also used the film's tag line "In space, no one can hear you scream." To say that the Marler Haley display is rare is an understatement. It's very hard to find even single posters, but to find the entire set at one time is virtually unheard of. These rolled posters have some wrinkles and crimps within them along with some edge wear. There is a tear in the top of the "cast" double crown and in the one featuring Yaphet Kotto, the upper right corner has been torn off. Other than this, the set is in very nice presentable condition. Rolled, Very Fine-. [The Empire Strikes Back (20th Century Fox, 1980). British Royal Charity World Premier Double Crown (20' X 30') Ralph McQuarrie Artwork]( [The Empire Strikes Back (20th Century Fox, 1980)]( British Royal Charity World Premier Double Crown (20" X 30") Ralph McQuarrie Artwork Collectors take note, posters for George Lucas' second space saga don't come any rarer than this! Showcasing a version of Ralph McQuarrie's unique "Vader in Flames" design, this truly unique Empire Day double crown was used exclusively for the film's British premier. For all intents and purposes, London's grand Royal Charity Premier of the picture also served as the World Premier, preceded only by smaller screenings in the days before May 20th. The marketing department took full advantage of the film's release date, which fell close to the Britain's May 24th Empire Day holiday, called Commonwealth Day after 1958. An army of Stormtroopers besieged London, marching through the streets holding placards of McQuarrie's minimalist design, stoking the crowd's already rampant excitement. This, however, is one of the few actual posters printed for the event, and significantly fewer remain 38 years later. Signs of handling in this coveted piece include slight edge and fold wear, pinholes in the corners, unobtrusive smudges, and mild creasing, especially in the corners. There is a small gouge in the lower right background, and paper lifts in the corners on the verso that show through. The poster also has some pieces of cellophane tape on the verso, and there is a bit of light touchup in the image folds. Overall, the poster displays well with an interior mainly free of flaws, and would be the envy of any serious collector. Folded, Fine/Very Fine. [You can browse and bid on the entire auction here](. [Back to Top](#top) []Around Heritage Auctions [Charles Taylor Bowling West Texas Tank]( Texas Regionalism Featured in Heritage Auctions' Texas Art Auction A spectacular example of Texas Regionalism is projected to vie for top-lot honors in Heritage Auctions' [Texas Art auction]( Nov. 10 in Dallas. "Texas Regionalism is a very distinct style of art, one that inspires a strong base of collectors through dramatic, often stark portrayals of life in various parts of the state," Heritage Auctions Texas Art Director Atlee Phillips said. "It's less about geography and more about a way of life that is captured brilliantly by several artists in this auction." [Charles Taylor Bowling West Texas Tank]( 1940 (est. $20,000-30,000) is an extraordinary oil-on-canvas of a West Texas tank by an artist who didn't even start painting until his mid-30s, while recovering from an illness. In this painting, he combines elements of realism, surrealism and modernism in a style that conveys his own inner vision of rural life at the end of the Great Depression. Bowling strays from the practice by many regionalist artists, who rely on eerie stillness to convey the psychological and physical isolation of human existence in wide-open West Texas. But Bowling's inclusion of a fast-spinning windmill and ominous storm clouds increases the anxiety and vulnerability of those trying to endure the elements. One of the more intriguing lots in the auction is [Alexandre Hogue Untitled, 1976]( (estimate: $10,000-15,000), in which the artist is exploring the style he called "Abstract Realism." Hogue believed that naturalism or true realism is not possible, that by attempting to create a realistic landscape, artists naturally change reality to fit their ideas. Rather than trying to portray the river as it appeared, Hogue has used formal abstraction, undulating lines, dynamic composition and unusual colors to present the river the way he saw it internally. [Julian Onderdonk A Fall Day]( (estimate: $10,000-15,000) is a stunning painting by a bi-regional artist with significant ties to both Texas and New York, where he studied for eight years. The more the demand for his artwork grows, both in and outside the state of Texas, the more recognition his paintings get as examples of American Impressionism which transcend any regional classification. This 14-by-20-inch oil-on-canvas is signed in the lower right with the artist's pseudonym: "Chas. Turner." [More information about Fine Art Auctions]( [Back to Top](#top) [Neil Armstrong Collection Heritage Auctions]( Space Memorabilia Auction Featuring The Neil Armstrong Collection Blasts Past $7.4 Million [A space memorabilia auction featuring The Neil Armstrong Family Collection™]( realized more than $7.4 million Saturday, Nov. 3, at Heritage Auctions. Armstrong's personally owned memorabilia — spanning [a childhood letter to the Easter Bunny]( to the [Apollo 11 ID Plate]( from the module he used to become the first person to walk on the Moon — sold for $5.2 million. The sale is the first of three auctions scheduled through 2019 of the legendary astronaut's lifelong collection. The three-day event set a world record for the most valuable space memorabilia auction ever held. Nearly 2,450 bidders snapped up space travel mementos, pushing sell-through rates above 99.5 percent by both lot and dollar value. "Thank you to the enthusiasts out there, the supporters of NASA, the lovers of science and the dreamers of impossible dreams," son Mark Armstrong said. "Thank you for your unwavering support of space exploration. It's my hope that you continue to do what you do to boldly propel us forward into the future." The Armstrong Family Collection™ is an extraordinary archive, chronicling the life and career of one of the most historic figures of the 20th century through the lens of the objects he loved, collected, and preserved for decades. Much of the Apollo 11 Mission Commander's collection had never before been seen by the public or offered for sale. Armstrong's personal [Spacecraft ID plate from Apollo 11's Lunar Module Eagle]( flown on the first manned lunar landing, July 16-24, 1969, sold for $468,500. The [Largest Size American Flag]( measuring 17-3/4 inches by 11-1/2 inches, Armstrong kept as a treasured Apollo 11 souvenir, sold for $275,000. Two evocative relics commemorating mankind's command of the air, a [piece of the propeller]( and [section of the wing fabric]( from Orville and Wilbur Wright's invention of the first successful airplane, sold for $275,000 each. The relics from the Wright Brother's historic flight were carried to the moon just 66 years later when Armstrong's made his footprint on the lunar surface. To preserve and document the collection's authenticity and provenance for generations to come, the Armstrong family and Heritage collaborated with [Collectibles Authentication Guaranty]( (CAG) to accurately attribute and certify every item. "CAG did a wonderful job expertly describing and, when appropriate, grading and encapsulating the Armstrong Family Collection items," said Michael Riley, Director of Space Memorabilia at Heritage Auctions. "CAG's certification made it far easier for us to auction the collection and likewise for our clients to evaluate and bid on it." [Armstrong's light blue owned and worn Gemini flight suit, a rare, surviving memento of his legendary work on the Project Gemini program soared to $109,375]( more than five times its $20,000 pre-auction estimate. "Working with the family to share objects near and dear to Neil Armstrong with his fans and space memorabilia collectors is a shining point in the history of Heritage," said Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auctions. "We are excited for the spring, when we have the pleasure of bringing more never-before-seen artifacts and private mementos to the world."
