[Back to Top](#top) []Bob Lubbers Original Art at Heritage Auction Starting This Week Heritage is honored to be offering [original art from the estate of Bob Lubbers]( this week and in the weeks to come. Below, our own Weldon Adams summarizes the career of this Golden and Silver Age ace. [[Bob Lubbers Kemi of Ancient Egypt Tryout Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (1950)] Lubbers drew this Prince Valiant-esque Sunday as a tryout.]( Bob Lubbers could easily be described as a well-rounded artist, but to most of us, it was his women who really stood out. His comic strip work has sometimes been compared with Frank Frazetta's work. At age 18, Lubbers took life drawing classes with fellow student Stan Drake, and the two entered the comic field together in 1940 at Centaur, where Lubbers worked on such Golden Age features as Reef Kinkaid, Scarlet Ace, and the Arrow. Soon he was working for Fiction House on popular features including Captain Wings, Senorita Rio, and Firehair. After a stint in the Air Force during World War II, he returned to the comic industry with more work for Fiction House, some for St. John, and some Vigilante stories for DC Comics. One of his mentors, cartoonist Raeburn Van Buren, introduced Lubbers to the comic strip industry in 1950. In short time he was working on Tarzan (from 1950-1954) and turning in some outstanding work comparable to the Tarzan artists who came before him - Burne Hogarth, Ruben Moreira, and Dan Barry. After an introduction to the Al Capp Studio, Capp put Lubbers on a new strip titled Long Sam, which was sort of a female "Li'l Abner gone to the big city" style series. He worked on this strip for eight years (1954-62). During that time, he also worked on The Saint, Secret Agent X-9 (as "Bob Lewis"), and on Li'l Abner from 1958-1977. Lubbers contributed to many other strips, including ghost-penciling Big Ben Bolt and Rusty Riley. In 1967 he launched his own original comic strip Robin Malone. The late 1970s saw a return to comic work with stories for Marvel Comics (Defenders #61 and The Human Fly #16 and 17). Praised as an unsung master of "good girl" art, Lubbers is currently getting acclaim and recognition from a modern audience, most notably in Italy where Glamour International: The Good Girl Art of Bob Lubbers was published in 2001. Lubbers has been awarded the 1998 "Yellow Kid Award", the 2002 "Inkpot Award", and his Tarzan work was displayed in a 2003 exhibition at the Musée du quai Branly in Paris, France. Bob Lubbers passed away July 8, 2017 at the age of 95. [Back to Top](#top) []San Francisco Preview of Comics and Comic Art Highlights Next Wed.-Fri. [Heritage San Francisco Office]( [Back to Top](#top) []Around Heritage Auctions [Colonel Harland Sanders Personally Owned and Worn Suit and Hat (1979-1980)]( Col. Harlan Sanders' Original Suit Offered at Auction by Longtime Driver For the last decade of his life, Colonel Harland Sanders relied on Dick Miller perhaps more closely than anyone else. Sanders' driver and friend, Miller tended Sanders' estate gardens, looked after his Sanders' wife, Claudia, after her husband's passing in 1980, and came to feel like a part of the Sanders family. After nearly 40 years with the company, Miller is opening his personal archive of gifts and memorabilia he collected during his time with Sanders. The collection spans 20 personal items, including [an authentic and iconic Col. Sanders White Suit and a matching Stetson cowboy hat]( rarely seen at auction. The two first met in 1979 outside of Claudia Sanders Dinner House in Shelbyville, Kentucky. Sanders asked if Miller would mow grass and wash dishes. "Wash dishes?" Miller asked. The Colonel replied, "Yes, the dishwasher is the most important job. The dishwasher knows if people are eating the food or not!" Miller says he even "drove his boss to his grave," when he was asked to drive the Colonel one last time - when he was asked to drive the hearse at the Colonel's funeral. The collection includes [Mr. and Mrs. Sanders' personal driver's licenses]( and an assortment of [Sanders' credit cards]( such as his American Express card, and even Sanders' personal Kentucky Fried Chicken Corp.-branded Chevron credit card. Miller is also offering Sanders' [personally owned belt buckle, inscribed "COL. SANDERS/SAN ANTONIO, 1974," and Sanders' personal, silver-toned vintage Diastar 8 Rado wristwatch]( all gifts he received over the years. Miller said the time has come sell his memorabilia because "I want someone who wants and appreciates the items to end up with them," he said. "He was very generous with the wealth he earned. It was important to him to donate money to education and schools." The archive appears at a live auction Nov. 3 at Heritage Auctions' [Entertainment & Music Memorabilia Auction]( with worldwide internet bidding available through HA.com.
