[]Gold Bars come to Chicago
[Harris Marchand & Co MS Gold Ingot. 56.65 Ounces]( The [October 11-14 Chicago Signature Auction]( is open for bidding now, and it is especially notable for its offerings of California Territorial Gold. While most of our auctions have selections of Territorial gold, this one is unusual in that it features five Gold Rush-era ingots, from three different consignors.
From the [Marcello Collection]( come examples of two of the more unusual assayers recovered from the S.S. Central America. A [83.54 ounce ingot from Henry Hentsch]( represents the scarcest hallmark from the shipwreck. No coins were issued under his name, only gold ingots, and to our knowledge none of those were known until the salvage of the S.S. Central America in 1988-1989, when 33 such ingots were recovered. The [56.65 ounce ingot from Harris Marchand & Co.]( is the third least commonly recovered hallmark from the S.S. Central America. This firm operated in Sacramento and in Marysville, much closer to the gold fields in the Sierra foothills. 37 such ingots were recovered, with this example being the ninth largest by weight.
By far the most ingots recovered from the S.S. Central America were examples from the firm of Kellogg & Humbert, with a total of 346 bars recovered representing more than 60% of the ingots recovered. This auction features three such bars: a [40.64 ounce ingot, .925 fine]( another weighing [48.30 ounces, .840 fine]( and the largest of the three weighing in at [61.89 ounces, .905 fine](.

[]Bid now on currency from the Selections from the Eric P. Newman Collection Part X
[United States of America - Fr. 5 $5 1861 St. Louis Demand Note. PCGS Extremely Fine 40 Apparent](
[United States of America - Fr. 5 $5 1861 St. Louis Demand Note. PCGS Extremely Fine 40 Apparent]( Heritage is pleased to present the [Selections from the Eric P. Newman Collection Part X]( containing a wide range of world and American paper currency, at our Dallas Headquarters on Wednesday, November 7. This panorama of genres, topics, and styles comprises the first part of our one-day Signature auction event. [The Part XI sale]( devoted to coins, mechanical devices, books, and documents from Eric's extraordinary collection will follow later the same day. An Internet session will follow on Saturday, November 10.
The currency in the Part X auction spans the globe and ranges from all periods of paper money issuance, from the earliest Ming Dynasty era to the modern South American inflation period. In between are fascinating Colonial American notes printed by Franklin, the most comprehensive collection of Continental Currency contemporary counterfeits (with newly clarified diagnostics and newly discovered varieties), currency related to the American Anti-Slavery movement, Emperor Norton notes, and Missouri fur traders' "Bon" scrip. Featured are the discovery engraver's sample sheets with an Audubon running grouse. (See the reprint of "Discovered! The First Engraving of an Audubon Bird," by Peck and Newman, in the catalog for this auction). Most of the items have been in the Newman Collection for at least 75 years and have never appeared at auction. That includes one of [the finest known $5 1861 St. Louis Demand Notes]( acquired in Eric's initial 1940 purchase from the "Col." E. H. R. Green estate. The outstanding diversity of notes in this sale provides important pieces in a range of prices that will entice every collector. Additional highlights include:
- [China Empire - Ming Dynasty 1 Kuan, Circa 1368-1399](
- [Colony of Connecticut July 10, 1733, redated 1735 3 Shillings, the Newman plate note](
- [Georgia 1775 5 Pounds "Native American with Bow" vignette](
- [Continental Currency - May 20, 1777 $8 Very Choice New 64PPQ](
- [Fairman, Draper, Underwood & Co. Sample Sheet with the Audubon Running Grouse vignette](
- [California - Imperial Empire of Norton 50 Cents Type 5 note](
- Two different small format "Bon" hand-accomplished scrip notes used in early St. Louis
- [Rhode Island 1800 16 Cents/1 Shilling note, the Newman and Durand plate note](
- [United States $2 1864 Legal Tender Essay Proof](
As in the previous auctions, items sold are from the extensive collection of Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (a Missouri not-for-profit corporation), which have been assembled over a period of 90 years. Proceeds of the sale of all items will be used exclusively for supplementing the Society's scholarly numismatic research efforts and for the benefit of other not-for-profit institutions selected by Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society for public purposes.
Bids are now being accepted for this auction at [currency.HA.com](.

[]Seldom Seen Selections: The Garrett 1849 Proof Half Dollar
[1849 50C PR64 PCGS. CAC. WB-101](
[1849 50C PR64 PCGS. CAC. WB-101]( The 1849 proof Seated Liberty half dollar is a celebrated rarity in the series, with an unknown, but certainly small mintage. Experts are in close agreement on the rarity of the issue today. In their excellent 1993 series reference, Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert speculate that only five examples of the 1849 proof remain extant. The current population data from the leading grading services shows a total of seven pieces certified in all grades, including an unknown number of resubmissions and crossovers. We are aware of six extant examples.
The [PCGS-graded Proof 64 example]( we offer in the [October 11-14 Chicago Signature Auction]( displays colorful cobalt-blue toning, which occurs mostly in the recessed areas, some yellow-gold and lavender around the rim areas, and light reddish-brown patination, mostly in the fields. The design elements are exquisitely struck, with no areas of weakness, and there is a noticeable contrast against the reflective fields. The surfaces are well-preserved, with no significant contact marks or unsightly spots. A small lint mark is located in the field just beneath the cap, and a minuscule contact mark is seen on Liberty's eyebrow, which serves to identify the piece.

Iconic Artist Patrick Nagel Among Featured Artists in Heritage Auctions' October Illustration Art Auction
[Patrick Nagel original art at auction Heritage Auctions]( [Five works]( by Patrick Nagel are expected to be among the most heavily pursued offerings in Heritage Auctions' [Illustration Art auction]( Oct. 12 in Dallas.
Nagel is known for his unique interpretation of women, often depicted with black hair and red lips juxtaposed against white skin, painted in a style that descended from Art Deco. His works regularly appeared in a number of publications - he frequently contributed images to Playboy - and on album covers, the best known of which was Duran Duran's Rio album.
"Patrick Nagel was one of those artists whose style was so unique, so distinct, that his works are recognized instantly by collectors everywhere," Heritage Auctions Senior Vice President for Fine & Decorative Arts Ed Jaster said. "He remains one of the primary reasons why Heritage has been so firmly established as the premier auction house for hard-to-find artworks, especially when it comes to popular culture."
The top lot in the group could be Nagel's 48-by-40-inch acrylic-on-canvas [Untitled, 1984]( (estimate: $60,000-80,000), which is signed in the lower left by the artist. Part of the widespread appeal in the painting is the fact that it graces the cover of Nagel: The Art of Patrick Nagel, which is the only book the artist wrote about his own artwork.
A 1983 [Untitled]( work (estimate: $40,000-60,000) is another in Nagel's signature style, with a dark-haired woman with bright white skin, full red lips and dramatic eyebrows. The 27-by-36-inch image is done in acrylic on canvas, and is signed and dated in the lower left.
Nagel eschews his signature style of a close-up portrait-style image in [The Leopard Trainer, Playboy Illustration]( (estimate: $30,000-50,000), although he retains an erotic edge by leaving the trainer's jacket open. The 23-by-17 acrylic-and-pencil-on-paper, which is signed in the lower left, was reproduced on page 54 of Nagel: The Art of Patrick Nagel.
The artist included an animal theme again in [Aries]( (estimate: $15,000-25,000), a 20-by-9-inch acrylic-and-pencil-on-paper image of a woman, her gown slightly agape, standing behind a ram, which is the symbol for the astrological sign of the same name.
The only Nagel artwork in the auction that is not a painting is [Carol, 1984]( (estimate: $2,000-3,000). This bronze with polychrome shows a woman wearing an off-the-shoulder dress and a matching hat inspired by World War II-era military design, and stands 20-1/2 inches high.
