[Back to Top](#top) []Birth of the Modern Comic Book - The Funnies [The Funnies #27 (Dell, 1930) Condition: FN-]( The Dell Publishing company began in 1921 by concentrating on pulp magazines. The company would launch [Popular Comics]( in 1936 focusing mainly on reprinted newspaper strips, but in 1929, owner George Delacorte Jr. pioneered a new publication that ranks as one of the very first original-content comic books. The title was [The Funnies]( a 24-page tabloid insert designed to resemble newspaper Sunday Comics Sections. The tabloid featured all-new material like "Frosty Ayre" by Joe Archibald, "Deadwood Gulch" by Boody Rogers, and "My Big Brudder" by Tack Knight. This is widely considered as the first American periodical to specialize in original (not reprinted) comic strips. There were 36 tabloid issues of The Funnies, all of which are extremely difficult to find today. In [this week's Comics Internet Auction]( we have six of these rarely seen historic comic book precursors available for bidding.
