[]The Dr. Hans Wilski Collection of Ottoman & Islamic Coins
[Dutch East Indies Trade Lion Daalder of 7 Shahis 1634 XF40 NGC]( [Ottoman Empire. Ahmed I (AH 1012-1026 / AD 1603-1617) gold Dinar ND (AH 1012 / AD 1603) AU55 ANACS](
[Ottoman Empire. Suleyman I (AH 926-974 / AD 1520-1566) silver 'Hairpin' Larin AH 92(6)? (AD 1520) VF - cracking]( [Ottoman Empire. Mehmed III (AH 1003-1012 / AD 1595-1603) silver 'Hairpin' Larin ND UNC - broken]( [Ottoman Empire. Mehmed II (1st Reign, AH 848-850 / AD 1444-1446; 2nd Reign, AH 855-886 / 1451-1481) 30-Piece Nearly Complete Set of Uncertified Akces]( This September 2nd to October 7th, Heritage Auctions is proud to offer an [impressive selection of Ottoman and Islamic coins from collection of Dr. Hans Wilski](. A giant in the field of Ottoman numismatics, Dr. Wilski had a deep respect and fascination with all aspects of this intriguing historical epoch, though his personal passion was certainly collecting and studying the countermarks employed on Ottoman coins—a subject on which he published two standard reference works.
Dr. Wilski's collection covers the entirety of the Ottoman period, from the nadir of the great Seljuqs of Rum and the Mongol Ilkhanate, through the emergence of a myriad of rival beyliks on the Anatolian Peninsula with whom the nascent Ottomans vied for dominance, and within the Ottoman dynasty itself from the reign of Osman I's son Orhan, to the collapse of the empire under Mehmed VI. This first auction will cover the pre-Ottoman period through the reign of Mahmud I, or a period of roughly 500 years.
Some of the key highlights to be offered include a potentially unique and [unrecorded Dutch Trade Lion Daalder of 7 Shahis]( dated 1634 and graded XF40 by NGC, an incredibly well-preserved [second-series akce of Mehmed II, "the Conqueror" from Constantinople dated AH 865 (AD 1460/1)]( first Ottoman coin struck in the old Byzantine capital, an excessively rare [gold Dinar of Ahmed I from the Algerian mint of Tilimsan (Tlemcen)]( a pair of Mexican Cob 4 and 8 Reales counterstamped for circulation in Tunisia, and a seldom-seen double-counterstamped gold Ashrafi from the reign of Mehmed IV struck on a Venetian Ducat. Other fantastic pieces to be on the lookout for are a largely unrecorded selection of Ottoman "hairpin"-style larins, among which are a [hitherto unknown emission of Suleyman I, "the Magnificent"]( and another from [Mehmed III struck at Nahcivan in Azerbaijan]( a diverse selection of elusive beylik coinages featuring a wide array of counterstamps; a [30-Piece, nearly complete type set of Mehmed II akces, a 19-Piece nearly complete date run of Yemeni Uthmanis of Suleyman I]( and much, much more.
We hope that you are as excited about this opportunity and these wonderful coins as we are, and will peruse the auction and bid on these great pieces of history before they disappear from the market for untold years to come. Bidding will begin the first Sunday in September, with a live auction session on Heritage Live! on Sunday, October 7th at 5pm CT.

[]Seldom Seen Selections: Choice 1873-CC Half Dollar with Arrows, virtually unobtainable finer
[1873-CC 50C Arrows MS64 NGC. WB-103, Die Pair 6, R.4](
[1873-CC 50C Arrows MS64 NGC. WB-103, Die Pair 6, R.4]( Arrows were placed at the date on the half dollar part way through the year in 1873, to indicate a slight increase in the weight of the planchet, from 12.44 grams to 12.5 grams. The arrows were continued in 1874, and removed the following year, creating a popular two-year design type. The mintage of Arrows half dollars at the Carson City Mint was a relatively modest 214,560 pieces in 1873, making the issue rare at the MS64 grade level, and virtually unobtainable any finer.
A mere four pieces have been awarded finer numerical grades than the NGC-graded MS64 example of this date we are offering in our current Long Beach Signature auction. NGC has seen fit to grade two examples at the Gem (MS65) level, while PCGS has graded one coin each at MS65 and MS66, along with a single example at MS64+.
Our [September 6-9 Long Beach Signature Auction]( features [an impressive Choice example]( with sharply detailed design elements, aside from some weakness on the tail feathers. Clash marks show in the reverse shield and fine die cracks are evident through the olive leaves. The well-preserved surfaces are lustrous and appealing, with highlights of sea-green and lavender-gray toning.

[Ancients: MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Philip V (220-179 BC). AR tetradrachm (32mm, 16.72 gm, 11h). NGC MS ★ 5/5 - 4/5 Fine Style](
Though not a rare coin by any means, Philip V tetradrachms seem to have circulated widely and apparently for a long period of time, as they are usually seen today in fairly worn condition. This particular lot is exceptionally unusual in this regard, as it is not only completely uncirculated, but also free of any significant imperfections. It is truly deserving of the star designation assigned to it by NGC, and I think it would make a great addition to any high-grade ancient Greek type collection.
[Ancients: CYCLADIC ISLANDS. Paros. Ca. 500-480 BC. AR drachm (17mm, 6.07 gm). NGC Choice XF â

[Ancients: CYCLADIC ISLANDS. Paros. Ca. 500-480 BC. AR drachm (17mm, 6.07 gm). NGC Choice XF ★ 5/5 - 5/5](
As a general rule, coins of the Cycladic Islands are much harder to find than those of contemporaneous regions in mainland Greece or Asia Minor. Though not quite as rare as the Delos didrachm that we sold in our August auction, this particular piece, from the island of Paros, is still not encountered often. In fact, this is one of only two Paros drachms that we have ever sold in our history. The toning further adds to its appeal in my eyes, clearly coming from an old collection and likely stored in a cabinet, in order to get its dark gray hues.

[French Cochin China: French Colony Proof 50 Cents 1879-A PR66 PCGS](
Right up there with the stylings of the Gothic Florin, in my opinion, is this beautifully designed French colonial issue. While not the largest denomination, nor the only French colony to bear this obverse illustration, it's definitely a scarce issue as French Cochin China existed for less than sixty years and only produced coins during ten of them. This proof emission easily wins me over with its sublime color and nearly flawless surfaces.
[Martinique: French Colonial gold Regulated/Countermarked 20 Livres ND (c. 1805) AU53 PCGS]( [Martinique: French Colonial gold Regulated/Countermarked 20 Livres ND (c. 1805) AU53 PCGS](
[Martinique: French Colonial gold Regulated/Countermarked 20 Livres ND (c. 1805) AU53 PCGS](
This coin has it all: stamps, countermarks, and a giant hole—all on an imitation flan. From yet another French colony—literally across the globe from my previous pick—this specimen hails from the Caribbean island of Martinique. What seems like an all-to-complicated way of issuing and regulating coinage, these pieces were covered with markings and assay stamps in an effort to separate genuine examples from imitations, and then pierced or plugged to regulate weight. The historical background surrounding these coins is actually fascinating, and the silver issues from this era are equally engaging. [Back to Top](#top)
