[]Chinese Provincial coinage leads results in $4.3 million Hong Kong auctions
[Chekiang. Kuang-hsü 50 Cents ND (1898-99) MS67 NGC](
[Chekiang. Kuang-hsü 50 Cents ND (1898-99) MS67 NGC]( Outstanding rarities from the W&B Capital Collection led the way as [Heritage's June 28-29 Hong Kong auction of world coins]( saw over $3 million in numismatic treasures change hands. All prices include a 20% Buyer's Premium.
Two extreme rarities from Chekiang were among the highlights of this auction. A [Kuang-hsü 50 cent piece, issued in 1898-99 by the Hangchow Mint]( is very rare in all grades, but not known in a finer grade than the NGC-certified MS67 example offered in our Hong Kong auction. It sold for $105,600 in our auction. An even rarer [Dragon Dollar from the same time period grades MS66, as certified by NGC]( compared to three VF Details coins that are the only examples to have been offered in public auctions in the last ten years. It sold for $440,000 as a Post-Auction buy.
From Kiangnan comes an [amazing Kuang-hsü 50 cent piece, dated 1899]( considered the rarest issue of all Kiangnan coinage. Graded MS62 Prooflike by NGC, this example is by far the finest known of this rarity, with the only other certified examples in the AU range. This coin hammered for $312,000.
Additional highlights from our Hong Kong coin offerings included:
- [Republic gold Pattern "Dragon & Phoenix" Dollar Year 12 (1923) MS64 NGC](
- [Hsüan-t'ung Pattern "Long-whiskered Dragon" silver Dollar Year 3 (1911) MS63 NGC](
- [Szechuan. Kuang-hsü 50 Cents ND (1901-08) MS63 PCGS](
- [People's Republic 36-Piece Complete Year Set of NGC-Certified gold 1 oz Pandas](
- [Republic Yuan Shih-kai Plumed Hat gold Pattern Dollar ND (1914) MS62 NGC](
- [Kiangnan. Kuang-hsü Dollar CD 1898 AU Details (Chop Mark) PCGS](
The associated June 27-29 World Currency auction raised over $1.3 million for its consignors. The top lot was a [Gem 1936 Central Bank of China 1 Yuan note, graded Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ by PMG](. This variety, issued in very small amounts, is elusive in any grade and extremely rare in an as issued state. It brought $84,000 when the bidding came to a close.
Our next offerings of world coins and currency are scheduled for August 14-17 at the ANA convention in Philadelphia, with bidding expected to open near the end of July. Preview these auctions now at [coins.HA.com]( and [currency.HA.com](

[]Seldom Seen Selections: The finest certified 1860-O Twenty
[1860-O $20 MS61 NGC]( After the San Francisco Mint opened in 1854, most of the bullion from the California gold fields went to that facility for coinage and bullion deposits dropped precipitously at the New Orleans Mint. Accordingly, only small mintages of double eagles were turned out at the New Orleans Mint after that time. Only 6,600 O-mint Liberty double eagles were coined in 1860, the third-smallest production total of the New Orleans series behind only the 1854-O and 1856-O, both major rarities.
The coins were all released into circulation at the time of issue and circulated widely in domestic and overseas trade. It is doubtful that any were saved by contemporary collectors, as there was little numismatic interest in high-denomination gold coins in general, and branch mint issues in particular. As might be expected, the 1860-O is extremely rare in high grade today. Only two specimens have been certified in Mint State grades, both at NGC. One is the MS60 Prooflike example that was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Republic. The other is the coin we are featuring in our [July 12-15 Summer FUN Signature Auction](.
Collecting double eagles did not become popular in this country until after the Gold Recall of 1933, because the high face value of each coin made setting aside a comprehensive date run of twenties too expensive for all but the most affluent collectors. The 1860-O began appearing at auction soon after the presidential order took effect.
[This coin is the finest-certified example of this elusive O-mint date]( graded MS61 by NGC. The design elements are much sharper than the norm for the issue, which is known as something of a strike rarity. Liberty's hair is unusually sharp on this piece and only star 3 shows slight softness on the obverse. The reverse devices are sharply rendered throughout. Like many examples seen, the yellow-gold surfaces display much prooflike reflectivity in the fields and show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade. The overall presentation is most attractive. This coin boasts the highest available technical quality, strong historic interest, and absolute rarity. We anticipate a record price, since there is no finer 1860-O double eagle that has appeared at public auction, nor is there any finer specimen indicated in any reference.

[]Website Tips: Buy Now and Minimum Offer for Make Offer to Owner lots
If you are participating in our Make Offer to Owner program, we have now made it possible for you to select both a Buy Now amount and a Minimum Offer amount on items that are eligible for the Make Offer to Owner program. You can set the minimum offer to anything you want, as long as it is at or above the minimum.
[tips-1]
By clicking on the link to "Change the Minimum Offer amount and/or set your own Buy Now price", a window on the page will open up, allowing you to either add/change the Buy Now price, or to add/change a minimum offer. This allows you, if you like, to specify both a Buy Now price and a Minimum Offer price; for instance, you can set a Buy Now price of $1,500, but can still choose to be notified of any offers above $1,300.
[tips-2]
Items with both a Buy Now price and a Minimum Offer price are distinguished in the search results by having both the Buy Now from Owner icon and the Make Offer to Owner icon visible. Once on the item page, the would-be buyer can choose between Buying Now at the designated price or Making an Offer.
[tips-3]
[tips-4]
To remove a lot from Buy Now status, just blank out the Buy Now amount, and add a minimum offer amount if you choose. If both the Buy Now and Minimum Offer boxes are blank, then you will be notified of any offers above the default minimum.
