Auction: April 20 - 23 Having trouble viewing this email? [View online version](. [Heritage Auctions]( [April 20 - 23 CCE World Coins Signature Auction]( Our world & ancient coin curators Sam Spiegel and Roxana Uskali picked their favorite items from our upcoming [April 20 - 23 CCE World Coins Signature Auction]( [Sam Spiegel] Sam's Picks Director, International Numismatics [BRUTTIUM. Locri Epizephyrii. Ca. 350-275 BC. AR stater (21mm, 8.68 gm, 10h). NGC MS[star] 5/5 - 4/5]( The coinage of Corinth and its colonies is in many regards a very straightforward series, as all of the coins follow the same basic design; Pegasus on the obverse and Athena on the reverse. The coinage of Locri Epizephyrii (located in Southern Italy) is not as prevalent as some of its sister colonies or mother city, and you don't come across its coins too often in the market. That's what makes this piece so special- as difficult as it is to find high-grade and problem-free contemporaneous coins of Corinth, it's orders of magnitude more difficult to find a similarly superlative piece of its colony Locri Epizephyrii. [BRUTTIUM. Locri Epizephyrii. Ca. 350-275 BC. AR stater (21mm, 8.68 gm, 10h). NGC MS * 5/5 - 4/5] [BRUTTIUM. Locri Epizephyrii. Ca. 350-275 BC. AR stater (21mm, 8.68 gm, 10h). NGC MS * 5/5 - 4/5]( [PONTIC KINGDOM. Mithradates VI Eupator (120-63 BC). AR tetradrachm (29mm, 16.70 gm, 11h). NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5] [PONTIC KINGDOM. Mithradates VI Eupator (120-63 BC). AR tetradrachm (29mm, 16.70 gm, 11h). NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5]( [PONTIC KINGDOM. Mithradates VI Eupator (120-63 BC). AR tetradrachm (29mm, 16.70 gm, 11h). NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5]( Though everyone has heard of Alexander the Great, and most collector wants to get an example of his coinage, I find the issues of Mithradates VI to be much more appealing in terms of their artistry. The lifelike rendition of the great ruler on the obverse shows just how much Greek art developed over the course of the Hellenistic period, starting with the oftentimes-uninspired portrait of Heracles on the coinage of Alexander. Besides its fantastic design, what I like about this particular example is its needle-sharp strike, as this issue often comes from worn dies. [LYDIAN KINGDOM. Time of Ardys-Alyattes (ca. 630s-560 BC). Kukalim(?). EL sixth stater or hecte (10mm, 2.36 gm). NGC Choice VF[star] 4/5 - 5/5]( As rare as they are, coins of Walwet (usually attributed to the Lydian King Alyattes) are regularly encountered in the market (such as lot 30142 in this auction). That of the enigmatic issuer Kukalim, however, is on an entirely different scale of rarity. His name is exceptionally clear on this example, which is the main selling point. My research suggests that far less than a dozen examples of Kukalim coinage have been offered at auction in the last 15 years, with the majority of those being trites, meaning that this hecte is a very special opportunity for the electrum [LYDIAN KINGDOM. Time of Ardys-Alyattes (ca. 630s-560 BC). Kukalim(?). EL sixth stater or hecte (10mm, 2.36 gm). NGC Choice VF * 4/5 - 5/5] [LYDIAN KINGDOM. Time of Ardys-Alyattes (ca. 630s-560 BC). Kukalim(?). EL sixth stater or hecte (10mm, 2.36 gm). NGC Choice VF * 4/5 - 5/5]( [Claudius I (AD 41-54). AR denarius (18mm, 3.71 gm, 7h). NGC XF * 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style] [Claudius I (AD 41-54). AR denarius (18mm, 3.71 gm, 7h). NGC XF * 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style]( [Claudius I (AD 41-54). AR denarius (18mm, 3.71 gm, 7h). NGC XF[star] 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style]( This coin has a lot going for it — rarity, style, eye appeal, and most notably, pedigree. Not only is this coin an objectively beautiful example of this scarce emperor, with an exceptionally lifelike portrait, but it has a pedigree going back to an auction in 1938. In the years since it first came to market, it has taken on a lovely dark gray toning throughout that highlights the legends and devices. [Basil II Bulgaroctonos (AD 976-1025), with Constantine VIII. AV tetarteron nomisma (20mm, 4.23 gm, 6h). NGC Choice AU[star] 5/5 - 5/5]( I've always been partial to Byzantine tetarteron nomismas. They are significantly harder to find than contemporary histamenons, especially in high-grade and problem-free. What I really like about this particular example is that it's very well-struck and on a large flan (which, as I've mentioned in the past, is something that really appeals to me). We last handled this coin about four years ago as part of the Dimitriadis Collection, so I was glad to see it come back to us as part of the Collection of a Scottish Gentleman! [Basil II Bulgaroctonos (AD 976-1025), with Constantine VIII. AV tetarteron nomisma (20mm, 4.23 gm, 6h). NGC Choice AU * 5/5 - 5/5] [Basil II Bulgaroctonos (AD 976-1025), with Constantine VIII. AV tetarteron nomisma (20mm, 4.23 gm, 6h). NGC Choice AU * 5/5 - 5/5]( [Roxana Uskali] Roxana's Picks Director of Numismatics, Chicago [Canada: Magdalen Island. Specimen Penny 1815 PR66 Brown NGC]( By land or by sea appears to be the running theme throughout these picks, with this Magdalen Island Proof Penny surpassing even the highest expectations in the strike department. The only token issued from this archipelago — illegally, apparently — it pays homage to the fishing industry with depictions of a seal and gutted cod atop each side respectively. As far as preservation, it is hard to image an example in a finer state, as hues of lilac, cerulean, and yes, even salmon produce an incomparable palate of color across the mirrored fields. This piece represents just one of the many exceptional pieces offered in the highly anticipated Doug Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens. [Canada: Magdalen Island. Specimen Penny 1815 PR66 Brown NGC] [Canada: Magdalen Island. Specimen Penny 1815 PR66 Brown NGC]( [Burma: Pagan Kyat CS 1214 (1852) MS66 PCGS] [Burma: Pagan Kyat CS 1214 (1852) MS66 PCGS]( [Burma: Pagan Kyat CS 1214 (1852) MS66 PCGS]( My interest is always piqued when I come across this type. Not just for the peacock, which happens to be my favorite (spirit) animal, but because finding a fully struck example remains an incredibly difficult feat. Bonus points given to this selection for its golden and teal hues — colors that are rather fitting given the design. This offering also happens to be among only a select trio to have received this top-level Gem grade, giving it that one-two combination of eye appeal and technical superiority that collectors crave. [Austria: Eggenberg. Johann Ulrich Taler 1629 MS61 NGC]( I'm always on the lookout for one-year types — especially crowns, and even more especially when they are toned in thick cabinet patination from long-term cabinet storage. Thankfully, I don't have to look any further than this Eggenburg Taler, which easily hooks me from the start. The imagery throughout is bold (that ruffled collar!) and there is even an anchor in the lower left quadrant of the crowned arms which represents the Ptuj dominion. For enthusiasts who also want the best of the type, this happens to be the only certified example of issue. [Austria: Eggenberg. Johann Ulrich Taler 1629 MS61 NGC] [Austria: Eggenberg. Johann Ulrich Taler 1629 MS61 NGC]( [France: Louis XV silver Mule French / Franco-American Jeton 1741/1755 MS63+ NGC] [France: Louis XV silver Mule French / Franco-American Jeton 1741/1755 MS63+ NGC]( [France: Louis XV silver Mule French / Franco-American Jeton 1741/1755 MS63+ NGC]( Moving back to water portion of these picks, this Jeton features a fierce portrait of Neptune wielding a giant trident and waves lapping at his feet, which just goes to show that some of the best imagery can be found on tokens. This example also happens to be a mule, which only adds to its intrigue, and it covers multiple collector interests; so by that logic, it's bound to attract almost everyone. [German States: Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle. August I Taler 1636-HS MS61 PCGS]( While the German section in this auction contains some incredible pieces, I cannot let a Mint State Wildman Taler go by without mention. This is exactly the kind of coin I collect, and for other Wildman enthusiasts, this offering undoubtedly hits the mark — just look at that strike! It's also one of the more interesting issues with three-dimensional detailing throughout — just look at the hair on his legs! To the eventual winner of this lot (I hope it's me), this is definitely a special coin. [German States: Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle.
