[]The Douglas Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens
[North West Company brass Unholed Token 1820 MS61 NGC](
[North West Company brass Unholed Token 1820 MS61 NGC]( Our upcoming April 20-24 [World Coins Signature Auction]( is shaping up very nicely, and one of the highlights is undoubtedly going to be the [Douglas Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens]( simply the finest collection of Canadian tokens to have ever been offered in a single auction. This collection will enjoy its own catalog, which is certain to become a key reference in the field.
Long-time dealer Doug Robins began collecting Canadian tokens in the 1970s, and as time passed this became a total passion. Every time a rare token came up that he didn't have, he bought it. After his death about a year ago, his family contacted Heritage to help disperse the collection, a task we gratefully accepted.
Many of the pieces are rare or even unique. Numerous proof issues are included, as are quite a few extremely rare silver issues. Here are just a few of the highlights:
- [North West Company brass Unholed Token 1820 MS61 NGC](. Plain edge and possibly unique as such. Extremely rare unholed, and the highest grade of any variety known to us.
- [Lower Canada. Pattern BON BOUR DEUX SOUS Penny 1812 PR65 Brown NGC](. Only two examples traced, of which this is by far the finest.
- [Lower Canada. Gold Wellington Peninsular 1/2 Penny Token ND (c. 1812) UNC Details NGC](. Possibly unique and the only example presently available on the market; holed at the top.
- [New Brunswick. Ship / St. John's 1/2 Penny Token ND AU50 Brown NGC](. The sole example recorded. The design is presumed to have been rejected because of the erroneous city name (St. John's instead of St. John)
- [SHIPS COLONIES & COMMERCE 1/2 Penny Token ND, Breton-1000 VF30 Brown NGC](. The only example of Breton-1000 in private hands, distinguishable by the style of the ship.
View previews of this auction now at [HA.com/Coins](. Bidding is expected to begin about March 27.

[]The Finest Certified Judd-145 1852 Ring dollar in gold
[1852 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-145 Thin, PR68 Cameo NGC](
[1852 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-145 Thin, PR68 Cameo NGC]( The reason for experimentation with gold dollars (Judd-136 to Judd-148) was to provide a larger, more convenient diameter for the coins. Gold dollars were small and easily lost, and in the early 1850s they represented a substantial amount of money for the average worker. Convenience lost out, however, to a more practical solution: The amount of silver was reduced in most subsidiary coinage in 1853, which returned the silver denominations to the channels of commerce rather than going to the melting pot. And the gold dollar diameter was increased in 1854, via the Type Two format.
Judd-145 is an annular (ring-shaped) pattern with a wide opening that restricts the legends to the date, denomination, and country name, struck in gold with a plain edge. The lower half of the reverse displays a wreath. Both thick and thin planchet variants are known of this pattern. The thicker variant weighs around 32 grains, and examples are believed to be original strikings. The restrikes weigh around 25 grains and are struck on thinner planchets.
It is tempting to call the [example we are offering]( in our upcoming [March 27-29 Dallas auction]( flawless. We can find no technical flaws on either side, and obviously NGC thought the same, having certified it as Proof-68 Cameo. The fields are heavily striated and give each side deep reflectivity. By way of contrast, the devices are heavily frosted, which gives the piece a cameo effect. For pedigree identification — which is important on a gold pattern in such a high grade — there is a small lint mark near the reverse rim, to the right of the R in DOLLAR.
No one will probably ever duplicate the collection of gold patterns assembled by Dr. Wilkison, but the ambitious collector today could assemble a set of gold dollar patterns. This piece would be the cornerstone of such a collection.

[]Website Tips: A Quick Way to Track
Ever get the new Heritage catalog, go through it, find the items that interest you, decide to track them and find that actually finding and tracking all the lots on the website takes forever? We have a solution for you. All Heritage sites offer a lightning-fast way to track items that interest you, by simply typing in the lot number.
To find this feature, simply go to the home page of the auction that contains the lots that you wish to track. The easiest way to do this is to click on the "Auction Home" link corresponding to the auction's catalog on the home page. Once there, scroll down until you see this box:
[A Quick Way to Track] To track lots, enter the lot number of the item that interests you in the text box, one per line. Then click "Submit".
You will immediately be taken to the My Tracked Lots page, where you can see all lots you have tracked from this auction and any other auctions from the current portal. The page will tell you which lots were successfully tracked from your request. Invalid lot numbers will not be tracked. In addition, you can place your bids directly through this page.
This method is ideal for use in any Heritage auction for which you have a catalog in hand. For auctions without catalogs, such as our weekly Tuesday Internet Coin Auctions, or if you do not know the numbers of the lots you wish to track, you should probably track your lots the traditional way, as you find them from the search page or as you inspect the lots on their individual pages. Please note also that lots on which you have placed a bid will show up in My Bids, rather than My Tracked Lots.

Mercedes-Benz from the Rolland Collection Leads $6.8 Million Collector Car Show & Auction
[Heritage Auctions]( A rare [2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren]( from the [Rolland Collection]( of custom exotics and racing cars sold for $308,000, making it the top seller in a $6.8 million auction of collectible vehicles. [Heritage Auctions]( and [Leake Auction Company]( presented the storied California collection during Leake's Feb. 23-24 Collector Car Show and Auction in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The Rolland Collection's selection of 24 rarities included Indianapolis race cars, midget race cars from the 1950s and custom hot rods. The entire collection crossed the block without reserve and sparked intense bidder interest. Close to 400 lots crossed the block during the two-day auction with 77 percent of the vehicles sold.
"We knew the Rolland Collection was something special and it is wonderful to see one of its vehicles come out on top," said Jim Halperin, Co-Founder of Heritage Auctions. "The collaboration between Heritage and Leake Auction Company proved to be a complete success."
During the 1950s, William Rolland joined the Shadoff Chrysler team to help construct one of the fastest vehicles ever built. The vehicle the team created set the world land speed record in its class at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
Well-known among collectors and historians, Rolland assembled the collection in 2010 for his private exhibit established in Newbury Park, California. The carefully curated selection represented Rolland's passion for performance and speed and every vehicle offered in the auction comes directly from the museum's holdings.
"This was an outstanding sale," said Richard Sevenoaks, General Manager of Leake Auction Company. "We were especially pleased with the response to the Rolland and other collections offered without reserve. No doubt, when cars are sold unreserved there is an added level of excitement."
