[]Admiral Collection Ten Dollar Gold highlights Long Beach results
[1875 $10 AU50 NGC](
[1875 $10 AU50 NGC]( [The Admiral Collection]( one of the finest early eagle and Liberty Head ten collections ever assembled and featuring coins long off the market, provided most of the fireworks as Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction soared to outstanding results. [This auction]( originally scheduled for February 22-26, but extended to February 27 due to technical difficulties, is expected to clear $20 million overall. All prices include a 20% Buyer's Premium.
The top coin in this auction was an [1875 eagle]( graded AU50 by NGC. With a mere 100 examples of this coin struck, this issue justifiably claims the status of the key to the Liberty Eagle series. With none of the survivors reaching Mint State status, this highly desirable example reached the impressive final price of $372,000.
A [1842-O eagle]( the sole finest survivor of the date at a PCGS-graded MS63, claimed a final price of $288,000. Only a handful of Mint State survivors exist of this issue, merely the second New Orleans eagle date. Another finest known New Orleans Mint coin, the [Eliasberg 1897-O coin]( retrieved $264,000 from an eager bidder. This PCGS-graded Superb gem was described by noted branch mint gold specialist Doug Winter as "nearly flawless." Overall, ten of the top fourteen coins to sell in this auction were eagles, and nine of those were from the [Admiral Collection](.
Among coins with a face value of something other than ten dollars, the highest result belonged to a [1794 dollar graded VF35 by PCGS](. 1794 dollars are immensely popular as the US Mint's first issue of the denomination, and this one, unusually for the date, features a sharp strike. It brought $303,000.
Just a few of the other highlights of this auction include:
- [1892-S $1 MS65 PCGS.]( Sold for $192,000
- [Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. 52.37 Ounces.]( Sold for $180,000
- [1795 $10 9 Leaves, BD-3, AU55 NGC.]( Sold for $144,000

[]Seldom Seen Selections: Mint State and Possibly Unique North West Company Token
[North West Company brass Unholed Token 1820 MS61 NGC](
[North West Company brass Unholed Token 1820 MS61 NGC]( The North West Company, based in Montreal, was a fur trade company that was formed in 1779. Initially it flourished; however, after 1810 conditions became more difficult, with declining beaver populations, the destruction of its post at Sault Ste. Marie in 1812 and increasing competition with the Hudson Bay Co., sometimes involving armed conflict. Ultimately, the rival companies were directed to combine and the North West Co. was absorbed by the Hudson Bay Co. in 1821.
The North West Co. tokens, which represented the value of one beaver pelt, were produced by John Walker & Co. in Birmingham, England in 1820. They were struck in copper and brass and the normal configuration was with an engrailed edge and a small hole drilled at the top for suspension. Almost all have been found in Oregon. All varieties are scarce to rare. Unholed examples in both metals total fewer than ten pieces.
Our upcoming [April 20-24 CCE World Coins Signature Auction]( features a spectacular [Mint State example of such a token struck in brass](. It is unholed and plain edge, and quite possibly unique as such. The token is well-struck, except in the center of the portrait, which is normal for the high relief of the die. Graded MS61 by NGC, it has an overall brown-yellow patina, with a few shallow verdigris spots and minor rim bumps. This piece is the only plain edge example (and the highest grade of any variety) known to us. Because of its edge, it is very tempting indeed to conclude that it is a special striking, never intended to be issued.
With both Canadian and United States ties, this piece is sure to attract spirited bidding.

[]Website Tips: Tie Bids
[website tips][website tips]
Under certain circumstances, it is possible for more than one person to have the same bid on the same item. This is actually fairly common, since people will tend to have similar ideas about an item's value, often based on having access to the same reference materials. In any case where there is a tie bid, the earliest bidder in our records is credited with being the high bidder.
What does this mean in practice? You need to pay attention when you complete your bid. Above are two different images from our website, both showing the results of $2 bids on the same item in the same auction. One of them congratulates the bidder for placing the high bid on the item. The other states that the bidder, with the same bid, has been outbid, and offers him the opportunity to place another bid.
You may notice that on the version of the page where the bidder has been outbid, the current bid is the same thing as the bid he just placed. If you see that, it is a dead giveaway that you were outbid by an earlier bid of the same amount and simply lost a tiebreaker. An astute bidder will also note that the high bid is revealed to him in this case; any further bid he places would be guaranteed to become the high bid on the item.
[website tips]
Under certain circumstances it is difficult to tell from search listings whether you are the high bidder on an item. Search pages show the amount of the current bid without regard to any secret maximum bid. If the search page shows an amount less than your secret maximum bid, you are the high bidder. If it shows an amount more than your secret maximum bid, then you are not the high bidder. But if it shows an amount equal to your secret maximum bid? Look at the color of the bid. If it is green, you are winning. If it is red, you aren't. If it's black, then you haven't bid on the item – or the website doesn't know that you've bid on it, possibly because you haven't logged in. Make sure you check the color!
[website tips]
[website tips]
My Bids will also always tell you whether you are the high bidder on an item, showing your bid in green if you're the high bidder and in red if you are not. Of course, My Bids is invaluable as a record for all your bids, not just the close ones, and our most astute bidders check this page on a regular basis.

Inscribed First Edition of The Great Gatsby May Bring $100,000 at Heritage Auctions in New York
[First edition The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald]( A [Signed and Inscribed First Edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby]( may sell for as much as $100,000 in [Heritage Auctions' Rare Book Auction]( March 7 in New York. Signed, modern first editions are among the auction's 600 lots, many from private collections, including a rare [Inscribed Presentation Copy of J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye]( (est. $20,000).
"'Signed, first editions' is the theme of this season's auction," said James Gannon, Director of Rare Books at Heritage. "We have the great fortune to offer many of the 20th century's greatest novels signed by their authors. Nearly all come from private collections not seen at auction in decades."
James C. Seacrest, a Lincoln, Nebraska, publisher and philanthropist, assembled the largest collection featured in the auction. Estimated to bring more than $440,000, all proceeds from the Seacrest Collection will be donated to charity, according to a family representative.
The Seacrest Collection features the [near fine, 1925 copy of The Great Gatsby]( inscribed by Fitzgerald in 1939 for Tatnall Brown, a banker and former Dean of Haverford College. "The inscription reads 'For Tatnall Brown / from one, who / is flattered at / being remembered / F Scott Fitzgerald / Hollywood, 1939,' which reflects Fitzgerald's deep and well-documented concern about his legacy as a novelist," Gannon said.
Additional signed modern editions from the Seacrest Collection also include copies of [On the Road by Jack Kerouac]( (est. $8,000) and Vladimir Nabokov's [1955 First Edition of Lolita]( (est. $4,000). Signed tomes by U.S. Presidents include [Crusade in Europe by Dwight D. Eisenhower]( (est. $5,000) and a [first edition of Whither Bound? by Franklin D. Roosevelt]( — an association copy inscribed by Roosevelt to his youngest son (est. $5,000).
Seacrest also sourced important volumes by Charles Dickens, including a signed and dated [First Edition, Second Issue, of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby]( (est. $25,000) and an [1843 First Edition of A Christmas Carol]( which includes an envelope addressed in Dickens' hand and signed by him (est. $15,000). The auction also offers additional copies of Dickens' classics from the Collection of Daniel J. King, such as [a set of Christmas books, including a third-person autograph note by the author]( (est. $15,000) and an [unsigned, First Edition, first issue, of A Christmas Carol]( (est. $10,000).
[Ian Fleming. Casino Royale]( The King collection includes choice, first-edition examples of [Ian Fleming's Casino Royale]( (est. $10,000), an [asbestos-bound copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury]( (est. $7,000) and two scarce Audubon Prints: [The White-Headed Eagle]( (est. $7,500) and an [Uncolored Gannet]( (est. $2,500).
The auction also features the first time Heritage has presented a significant grouping of Continental, Irish and Latin American literature. The Continental section is anchored by The Marylin R. Duff Collection, featuring an important signed [Holograph Manuscript by Jorge Luis Borges]( circa 1926 (est. $20,000), Louis-Ferdinand Céline's [Voyage au bout de la nuit]( a presentation copy of [Anna Karenina]( inscribed by author Leo Tolstoy (est. $10,000) and an inscribed copy of [Unzeitgemässe Betrachtungen]( by Friedrich Nietzsche (est. $30,000). Rounding out the auction's Continental, Irish and Latin American section offerings is [one of just 150 first edition copies of Ulysses by James Joyce]( (est. $12,500). The section also presents what is considered among the most significant association copies in all of Latin American literature: A 1969 first edition of [Pablo Neruda's Fin de Mundo]( (est. $12,000), inscribed by the author for Chilean President Salvador Allende.
