[Back to Top](#top) []Around Heritage Auctions Legendary John C. Hays' Colt Revolvers Expected to Exceed $1M at Heritage Auctions [Early Colt Firearms]( Two revolvers owned by legendary Texas Ranger Col. John Coffee "Jack" Hays could sell in excess of $1M in [Heritage Auctions' Arms & Armor, Civil War & Militaria Auction]( on Dec. 10 in Dallas. A [cased Whitneyville-Hartford Transition Dragoon presented to Hays by Sam Colt]( has an opening bid of $350,000, and has been deemed by experts in the hobby to be the most significant Texan-American arm to ever be offered to the public. The very first [Colt Civilian Model Walker]( with serial no. 1001 will open for bidding at $250,000. "John Hays' Rangers had previously used Paterson revolvers to defend the Texan frontiers against the Indians, which won him the attention of famed firearm manufacturer Samuel Colt," says David Carde, Heritage Auctions' arms and armor consignment director. "When the Mexican War broke out in 1846, Hays led a regiment of Texans in the U.S. Army, and Colt decided that Hays was the ideal candidate to promote that superiority of his revolvers which would lead to securing additional contracts from the U.S. Army." It is believed that Colt sent the very first pair of his Civilian Walker Revolvers (serial nos. 1001 and 1002) to Hays in June 1847. Soon after, he also presented Hays with a cased transitional Dragoon engraved with his name. The wooden display case is inscribed on the lid: COL. JOHN C. HAYS / TEXAS / DECEMBER 1847, and includes a powder flask, nipple wrench, bullet mold, cap dispenser, oiler, and Eley cap tin and key. The cased Dragoon, serial no. 1166 is the earliest known engraved Sam Colt presentation and is the only known example to have survived complete. "The importance of these guns cannot be overstated," says Carde. "We wanted to be absolutely certain about their authenticity before presenting them at auction and sought noted firearm specialists Herb Glass and Dan Cullity to inspect them." The auction will also feature an Ames Presentation Sword given to Hays by the state of Texas for his service during the Mexican War, and a Jaeger percussion rifle presented to Hays by the German Association. According to Herb Glass, "The existence of an intact original group of the arms of Col. John C. Hays is a remarkable discovery." [he Flying A's Range Rider Group]( But then we found that Dr. Fredric Wertham beat us to it by 60 years when he discussed this very cover in his book Seduction of the Innocent: "The activities which women share with men [in comic books] is mostly related to force and violence. 'Try this in ya belly, ya louse' the young lady says as she shoots the uniformed policeman in his midsection [2017 note: actually she is missing the entire guard tower by about five yards]. Scantily dressed, thighs and breasts exposed, she is leading three similar gun-girls." We have a VG copy of the issue in the current weekly auction. You can [bid on it here](.
