[Click Here to Register](     Interesting Fact: Sesame Street's Bert & Ernie This week's interesting fact was going to be: "On Sesame Street, the characters Bert & Ernie were named after two characters from Frank Capra's movie, "It's a Wonderful Life." In the movie Bert was the cop and Ernie was the taxi driver." But just before press time I discovered the following... The claim that the characters Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street were named after Bert the cop and Ernie the taxi driver in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" is a popular urban legend, but it is not accurate. The co-creator of Sesame Street, Joan Ganz Cooney, has stated that the names Bert and Ernie were chosen simply because they sounded like the names of two friends. The characters were designed to represent the interactions and dynamics of a typical friendship, with Bert being more serious and bookish and Ernie being more fun-loving and mischievous. The names Bert and Ernie have no connection to the characters in "It's a Wonderful Life." The idea that their names were derived from the movie is a common misconception, but there is no evidence to support this claim. "Sesame Street" premiered in 1969, while "It's a Wonderful Life" was released in 1946. The two shows have no direct link in terms of character names or inspiration. As with many urban legends, stories like this can persist due to their intriguing nature, but it's essential to verify claims with credible sources before accepting them as factual.
