I love weeds! Sort of. You’re probably expecting me to say that the joy of gardening is a dazzling display of Spring daffodils or that first crisp cucumber of the season. Maybe you even thought I’d say sowing seeds or seeing sunflowers is a highlight. But weeds? [Sampler](
[Get My Freebie]( Stick with me here. It’s not actually the weeds I love. It’s that weeds are an excuse for some alone time in the garden. Some silence. Some solitude. Whenever I need some quiet, there are always weeds to pull. Writer Becky Rupp states it nicely when she reminds us all that “There’s something soothing about green and dirt; as you crawl about by yourself, pulling up invasive stuff in the cucumbers, the jagged disruptions of even the most dreadful days, begin to smooth themselves over.” Of course, gardens are more than just a way to recenter ourselves after a trying day. Other joys are born of patience as we watch for that first squash blossom. Nor can we forget the meditative joy of literally connecting with the earth. “There is no better way to achieve a calm state than being grounded in the garden,” writes Pat Stone. Like Pat and Becky, the writers you’ll meet in these stories have managed to capture the joy of gardening in their own unique ways. A garden is art, a lesson in waiting, a moment for ourselves, a reminder of our humanity. And a garden is always good for a laugh. I dare you to discuss worm poop without a smile on your face. Mostly, though, a garden is a source of joy. There’s nothing better than popping a sun-ripened cherry tomato off the vine and experiencing its warm sweetness or watching bees covered in pollen move about the black-eyed Susans.
