Dang. No Images? [Click here]( SORRY, BUT... There's a new flu drug on the market, but it's probably not gonna help you much Here's the deal: There aren't many drugs out there that can treat the flu. This week the FDA approved a new one, which sounds like (and is) a pretty big deal. But this new treatment probably won't help you in any way. It'll most likely be given to only really serious cases—like, the kind of cases that land people in the hospital. For those people, though, it'll be great. This drug is a cool piece of a science The treatment attacks the influenza virus in a new and fun way, so it was a bit of a breakthrough in science. That's especially important because viruses can become resistant to the drugs we throw at them. Designing new and creative antiviral drugs is basically how we prevent flu outbreaks down the line, so you betcha we're excited to see this one out there. Anyway, the best way to help yourself is still the flu shot It's not like you can just buy it at CVS as soon as you start feeling sh*tty, so this drug probably won't change your life. If you don't want the flu (and who does), the best thing you can do is get the flu shot—no, [it's not 100 percent guaranteed]( you won't get the flu, but it's your best bet. ([P]([op Sci](, [Gizmodo](, [Greatist]() Try this Take a tip from the Scandinavians—eat your biggest meal around 4 or 5 p.m. They call it middag, and we call it genius. It's great for digestion, and you'll fall asleep way faster. If you get hungry ~9 p.m., have a light snack (the Scandis call it a kveldsmat). You won't feel too full, and you'll sleep like a baby. 😴 [Greatist]( EDITOR'S PICK About those gravity blankets. Are they really all they're cracked up to be? This past summer my boyfriend and I decided it was finally time to give one of those "magic" [gravity blankets]( a try. The blankets are weighted with beads, and people claim the sensation of having something heavy on top of them solves issues from insomnia to anxiety and beyond. Our two main questions were: 1) Will it really help us sleep better? and 2) will the stress of parenting disappear?? Answer: kinda We both tried it out and quickly learned that it's not great for sharing. It's too small, and trying to fit two people under it throws the weight off. Gravity blankets come in a range of weights, and you're supposed to choose the one that's closest to 10 percent of your body weight. We picked the one that was closer to my boyfriend's weight, and while he loved it, it was a little too heavy for me. Ryan said he experienced more restful sleep and woke up feeling refreshed (for once), so I let him sleep with it. I began using it less for sleeping and more for relaxing. And yes, it definitely helped me relax. I'm still looking for a magical sleep solution (maybe it's just lying solo instead of snuggling up with my S.O.), but the gravity blanket will definitely work for some people. THIS WEEK IN MENTAL HEALTH Three things that can help with depression 1) Taking warm baths daily. It's the pinnacle of any really good self-care Sunday—and also apparently a good way to pull yourself out of a depression. The study had a small sample size, but it found that most people who took a bath around 100 degrees Fahrenheit for up to 30 minutes daily reported feeling less depressed than those who didn't. [The Guardian]( 2) A "friendship bench." That's what they're calling it in Zimbabwe where it was created, but it's not exactly about the bench. The project was more about training hundreds of normal citizens in simple problem-solving therapy, so more people dealing with mental health problems could access care via their friends and community. [Quartz]( 3) Team sports. Data from more than a million people confirmed that exercise can improve the mental health of pretty much everyone—no matter their age, gender, education, or income. But people who play team sports tend to have the best mental health of all, probably because of the combined physical, social, and cognitive demands of sports.
