But so was diversity and inclusion [Predictions and Trends] Predictions & Trends What’s sticking with us for the rest of the year Cannes is when the industry comes together to hit reset, to look back at what worked and ahead to what’s on the horizon — and to cram in a seemingly impossible number of meetings as well as a few bottles of Provence’s finest vintages. Think with Google’s Brianne Janacek Reeber spent most of her time on Google Beach, interviewing dozens of industry leaders and hearing dozens more on stage. She’s gathered a few insights that are sure to inspire you. Not surprisingly, the intersection of creativity and technology was a hot topic. The debate now is less about whether data should play a role in creativity, but how and when. Ben Jones of Google’s Unskippable Labs, has [a lot to say]( on [the subject]( and at Cannes pointed out that, while data can boost the creative game, there will always be a gut feeling involved. “Data needs a story,” he said, “And that doesn’t start in a spreadsheet, but in our imaginations.” The other big conversation — on the beach and beyond — was an industry still struggling with diversity and inclusion. While there is much to discuss (and do) about it, one thing that often gets overlooked is the second half of that phrase. “It’s about diversity and inclusion,” said Luis Miguel Messianu, creative chairman and CEO at Alma DDB. “If you have diverse talent, you have to put them in leadership positions. The ‘and’ is really important. ... It’s one reason YouTube teamed up with nongovernmental organizations and government partners in the Philippines to launch an initiative called Digiskarteng Pinay. The phrase, which means “digital ingenuity,” came about after research revealed that Filipinos, especially women in rural areas, spend more time on educational videos than any other type of video content. A woman named Antoneth, for example, turned to video to transform her manicure and pedicure business into a full-fledged beauty parlor salon. To drive women’s empowerment across rural areas, Digiskarteng Pinay aims to connect Filipinas to opportunities through digital.
