The direction my state is heading in is troubling and scary. [View in browser]( {NAME}, Kaylee Timonet, an honors student and president of student government at Walker High School, a public high school outside of Baton Rouge, was abruptly stripped of her role and told by the school’s principal that she would no longer receive recommendations for college scholarships. What did this bright young student do to earn such a harsh penalty? Dancing with her friends at an after-school-hours prom party at which her mother was present and no illicit activity took place. She was penalized for dancing. Kaylee’s future was threatened, and her reputation and standing at her school damaged, literally just because she had fun and danced with her female friends. “They said they didn’t want her representing Walker High School. She was totally shocked,” Kaylee’s mom, Rachel said. “[The principal] told her she wasn’t living in the Lord’s way and questioned who her friends were and if they followed the Lord. She said she didn’t know how to answer that and they said it’s a yes or no question. Meanwhile, she’s sobbing.” Kaylee deserves a formal apology from the school administrators and to have her scholarship eligibility reinstated. But the reason I share this with you is this: Louisiana government is a lot like that high school and the creeps who tried to harm Kaylee’s future. If we allow the socially conservative extremists to run things without strong opposition, they will try to control everything about our lives. It isn’t too long before we are powerless to fight back—and the ambitions of this strain of the GOP will not be contained to this state or any other purple or red state. I am running to stand up for Kaylee, and everyone who wants to express themselves, control their own bodies, and live freely and openly without penalty. [The jungle primary election to see who makes it to the runoff is this Saturday—and I need your support to finish strong and carry this message to the general election in November.
