How to think your way to lower your scores. Bobby Jones once said, “Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course…the space between your ears.” I don’t think he could have been any more spot on. If you’re like most golfers you know that the mental game is one of the hardest aspects to master. To help you tackle this challenge I’ve provided some guidance below. How to Think Your Way to Lower Scores Use routines. Both pre-shot and post-shot routines are essential elements of the mental game. The pre-shot routine helps your mind and body get “into the zone” while the post-shot routine helps you analyze and learn from your results. Pro Tip: Use your routines on the putting green! Just because you’re not making a full swing doesn’t mean you can give your brain a break. In fact, the green is the place where you should be the MOST focused. Evaluate risk AND reward. It’s easy to get carried away and pull out driver on every tee box, but is that really the smartest play? Many times the answer is no - even for today’s top tour players. Be honest with yourself when thinking assessing a shot and think about the probability of a great outcome versus an ok or bad outcome. This is one of the easiest ways to avoid blow up holes. Pick the right club. It’s very common for amateur golfers to come up short on approach shots. Why? They’re simply selecting the wrong club. Want an easy way to fix this problem? Next time you’re assessing an approach shot just add 10% to the yardage and choose your club based upon THAT number instead of the actual yardage. Pick the right target. Next time you are on the tee box with some friends ask them what they are going to aim at. If you hear a response like “down the middle” or “out there” that player needs some help. Why? Because the mind responds much more effectively to SPECIFIC instructions like “hit that a patch of grass” or “land it in the shadow a of that tree” than it does to vague instructions like “hit it up the middle.” Understanding this simple psychology trick will help you improve your accuracy on every shot. Applying these lessons to your game will help you lower your scores and have more fun on the course!
