Gold began the week with cautious optimism as traders awaited the first Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting of 2024. Initially, gold prices held steady at around $2030 per ounce, anticipating a status quo from the Federal Reserve. However, the FOMC's unexpectedly hawkish stance, led by Chair Jerome Powell, took markets by surprise. Powell's remarks indicated a reluctance to entertain rate cuts in the near future, defying prior market expectations. As a result, gold prices briefly surged above $2050 per ounce before quickly retreating to the $2030 level following the FOMC announcement. Subsequently, a strong January Jobs Report, with 353,000 jobs added to the U.S. economy, dashed hopes of imminent rate cuts and further pushed gold prices down. Despite these fluctuations, gold remained resilient, closing the week near $2040 per ounce.
