After a relatively quiet Monday, gold rolled over on Tuesday and Wednesday on the heels of Fed Chair Jerome Powell's hawkish midweek statements to congress. It was barely holding the line at the $1,820 support level until receiving a jolt in the other direction on Thursday in the form of news we haven't seen hit the headlines for a while: the sudden instability and eventual collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Friday's stronger-than-expected Jobs Report, which normally would have applied downward pressure to gold, was utterly drowned out by investors rushing to the risk-off safety of gold on the Silicon Bank announcement. Next Tuesday brings a new data set on consumer inflation in the US, which may well return the Fed to front-of-mind for metals markets. So, gold may not be getting off the roller coaster anytime soon.
