Gold prices closed on the downside on Monday as investors braced for the Fed's 7th straight round of rate hikes. In recent weeks, economic data has pointed to signs of cooling inflation, but it remains hot. Therefore, the consensus is that the Fed will "only" hike rates +0.50% this time, which is still sharper than the average move in policy rates. Investors will likely take it as a sign that the Central Bank is willing to be more "agile" in the pace and timing of future hikes while it attempts to walk the fine line between fighting inflation and orchestrating a recession-free landing. Any rate hike less than what has become the 2022 standard of +0.75% should boost gold prices, at least in the short term. The November Consumer Price Index (CPI) is expected ahead of the meeting on Tuesday, which will only serve to bolster investors' opinions on the Fed's rate hike policy the following day, one way or the other.
