My hometown of Parkland, FL was changed forever six years ago today

Six years ago today, a mass shooter stole the lives of seventeen people and injured seventeen more in a school shooting in my hometown of Parkland, Florida. My sister was a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School at the time and had to hide in a supply closet with 25 other students for six hours. At one point her phone died, and my family and I didn’t know if we would hear from her again. My sister is luckily a survivor, but our family and community will never be quite the same as we were before February 14, 2018. That day, we became one of the many communities in our nation that have been changed forever by the trauma of gun violence. Since then, countless others have followed. I joined the GIFFORDS team just a few months ago because I couldn’t think of a more meaningful mission to dedicate myself to than the gun safety movement. This feels like more than just a job, since it’s so personal to my family and my community. I’m proud to represent them every day as I share my story.
