Six years since the tragedy in Parkland, Florida

Everything about the morning of February 14, 2018 was ordinary. After all, on Valentine's Day, the only atypical part of a student’s school day should be giving cards, candy, and flowers to friends or significant others. But the afternoon of this Valentine's Day at Stoneman Douglas turned into an unfathomable nightmare. Students were evacuated from the school while a gunman opened fire with an assault weapon in hallways and classrooms. Police officers rushed in with their guns drawn to stop the assailant. Students and teachers texted friends and family members, unsure of their fate. Fourteen students and three teachers were killed by the gunman in Parkland. Seventeen innocent lives were stolen in a matter of minutes. Seventeen families have a permanent empty seat at their dinner tables. Unfortunately, we know that Parkland was not the end of these horrific tragedies in our nation’s schools. On February 13th of last year, a shooter opened fire on Michigan State University’s campus, leaving three students dead. It doesn’t have to be this way, {NAME}. We are better than this constant fear and carnage. So many survivors became courageous advocates against gun violence after the Parkland shooting, and we’ve made real progress. But we still have much more work to do. Just last month, a Florida House committee voted to repeal part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, which would allow teenagers to buy rifles like the one the shooter used in the Parkland shooting. At the federal level, we must continue to work towards a future where commonsense measures like universal background checks are a reality. Today, I hope you’ll join me in honoring the victims of the tragedy in Parkland with action.
