Families have been torn apart due to this tragedy. Nineteen fourth graders will never have the chance to grow up. Uvalde is a community forever changed. We will never forget the innocent victims of this horrific tragedy whose lives and futures were stolen from them. This unspeakable tragedy injected new urgency into our growing movement to end gun violence. Congress worked swiftly to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act last year, and one month after Uvalde, President Biden signed it into law. It is the most significant federal gun safety legislation in nearly thirty years. But {NAME}, gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children in our nation. Our schools should be the safest places in our communities, full of learning and exploration—not the scenes of nightmares. While the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was an important step towards a safer future, this legislation won’t bring back these children, or any of the 45,000 Americans who die from gun violence each year. There’s still much more we must do to end the multifaceted gun violence epidemic in our country. With our continued efforts, I truly believe we can make our country a safer place, a better place—a nation where children don’t fear for their lives. I won’t rest until that future becomes a reality.
