Ten years ago was a dark day I’ll never forget

It’s a day that I’ll never forget. On this day, a minority in the Senate used the filibuster to block legislation to expand background checks shortly after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Today is April 17, 2023, exactly ten years after that dark day, and we are still fighting to enact universal background checks at the federal level. I know that this may be frustrating to hear. But {NAME}, I want you to understand that we still have made significant progress in our movement. Ten years ago, what we’ve accomplished would have been unimaginable. Many of our elected officials didn’t even want to talk about gun violence out of fear of sparking too much political division. But year after year, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and gun owners alike have joined us in our movement and said enough is enough. Even though there’s so much more to be done, our elected officials have taken action. Just last year, Congress passed the most significant gun safety legislation package in nearly three decades. So yes, progress has been made. But we must keep moving forward. Just this past weekend, we witnessed multiple heartbreaking tragedies: over 20 people were shot at a sweet sixteen birthday party in Alabama. The Louisville community is reeling again after two people were killed and four others were injured at a shooting in a park. In St. Louis, 16 year old Ralph Yarl was shot in the head simply for ringing the wrong doorbell. We cannot become numb to this violence. We must work together to stop this.
