But instead of focusing our energy remembering the seventeen lives lost, we’re pulled to respond to yet another tragedy on a school campus, this time at Michigan State University. This tells you everything you need to know about America’s gun violence crisis. Layer upon layer of preventable tragedy. Some of the same students who survived the shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan a year ago are now living through the trauma of last night’s shooting. Yesterday, students at MSU had an ordinary day—shuttling between classes and sharing meals in the dining halls. Five years ago today, students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School began the day in an ordinary way too. They sat through morning announcements, which included the daily affirmation "Life supports me in every way possible." There was a Valentine's Day reminder to all students that "love has many definitions, but abuse isn't one of them." Everything about the morning of February 14, 2018 was typical. But then, the afternoon turned into an unfathomable nightmare. Police officers rushed in toward classrooms with their guns drawn while a gunman opened fire in hallways and classrooms. Students were evacuated from the school, unsure about the fate of their teachers and friends. Fourteen students and three teachers were killed by the senseless actions of the gunman in Parkland. Seventeen innocent lives gone too soon. Now, gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in America. This is a statistic that makes my heart ache, and it’s a driving force for me as to why we must keep moving forward in our work to end gun violence. It’s been five years since Parkland, but we still have a long way to go to make our communities safe from the imminent threat of gun violence. We must continue to work towards a future where commonsense measures like universal background checks can prevent future tragedies. No child should go to school with the fear that they won’t return home afterwards. No college student should fear for their life in the student center. We’re so much better than this constant fear and carnage. Today, I hope you’ll join me in honoring the seventeen victims of the Parkland massacre with action.
