Our work has not only shifted the politics of gun safety, but we have saved lives. None of that happens without support from people like you. [But we can’t stop now, especially now: so please, contribute $3 or whatever you can afford today.]( [CONTRIBUTE NOW]( --------------------------------------------------------------- {NAME} - This summer, devastating mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde led to federal action for the first time in nearly 30 years. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is proof that we CAN see progress on this issue. We broke through a historically polarized Congress to pass the most meaningful gun safety law in decades—and even had 15 Republican Senators vote in favor. Republicans had hoped the 2022 midterms would be similar to the outcome of the 1994 midterm election when then-President Bill Clinton lost control of Congress after backlash over passed gun safety legislation. What was the difference? The politics of gun safety have shifted drastically. For the first time in at least 25 years, no Democrats have an "A" rating from the NRA. After years of federal inaction on gun violence, the gun lobby is losing power in Washington and the general public is seeing who they truly are: overpaid political hacks resting in America's wealthiest zip codes, far removed from everyday Americans and even gun owners. Pre-election polls and exit polls showed gun safety is now a top priority for Americans, including nearly half of Republicans and a majority of gun owners. This level of support was not a reality in 1994. America increased their support for the NRA in the years after 1995. Now the NRA and the gun lobby are at its lowest point where half of Americans view them unfavorably. And unlike in 1994, in this election cycle Democrats are running on their gun safety records, not running away from them. That is why at Giffords, we leaned in: - $10 million invested in support of gun safety candidates across the country, including: - $1 million for our Giffords Florida program - $5 million in ad buys in the Colorado and Pennsylvania Senate races - Over $350,000 in direct donations to campaigns and state parties - 288 candidates endorsed in races across the country - 67 events held virtually and in-person across the US - Six-day gun safety bus tour across Florida with 21 events Gun safety was a winning issue for candidates, and in some of the closest races, gun safety voters cast the deciding ballots. That is only possible because the politics have changed dramatically on this issue—and a huge part of that is the work we’ve done together to build a moment of Americans committed to making our communities safer from gun violence.
