[Giffords] {NAME}, Eight years ago today, and just months after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the U.S. Senate voted down an effort to expand background checks. Do you remember how you felt that day? The anger. The pain. The disappointment when 46 Senators looked at the most benign and practical solutions offered by moderates from both parties and then looked over their shoulder at the powerful, shadowy gun lobby and brought shame on themselves by choosing to do nothing. Some of those who blocked this lifesaving legislation then are still in the Senate today. Some are even up for re-election. And they will have a chance to vote on background checks again once the Senate brings the new background checks bill to the floor. And our job remains: either we must pass commonsense legislation to keep our communities safer from gun violence, or we must elect a Senate that will.
