I have not lost my voice

I was shot in the head while meeting with constituents in Tucson. Because of the damage the bullet caused to the left hemisphere of my brain, where the language function sits, I have aphasia. This means that even though the words are there in my head, I have a hard time getting them out. Aphasia may make it harder for me to speak. But I have not lost my voice. [Photo of Gabby speaking at a rally]( The road to recovery hasn’t been easy for me, but I’ve never given up. In addition to speech therapy and physical therapy, I dedicate much of my time to riding my bike, playing my French horn, and practicing yoga. They help me keep moving forward and getting better, day by day. [Photo of Gabby on her bike]( My recovery is just like the work we do together to end gun violence. Some days are more difficult than others. I know sometimes it may feel like the challenges of ending gun violence in our communities are insurmountable, especially when we see news of another mass shooting or learn of countless other tragedies that don’t make the headlines. But even in the dark moments, we can’t forget about the progress that we’ve made together. In the eleven years since GIFFORDS’ founding, we’ve helped pass over 620 gun safety laws in states nationwide. In 2022, we helped pass the most significant federal gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. We still face stiff headwinds, and we cannot give up. If we lose hope, we let the gun lobby win. And we can’t let that happen. A big part of standing up to the gun lobby’s lies, fear, and large sums of money is reaching our organization’s fundraising goals.
