Back-to-school season shouldn’t be like this

We are angry. It should outrage all of us that yesterday in Georgia, kids and teachers died at school. And that students who survived shared on TV how they didn’t even cry because it felt “normal” that someone might bring a gun to school and shoot their classmates. There’s nothing normal about what happened yesterday. It should outrage us that teachers in America go to work with the fear of getting shot, and that during their back-to-school training they have to learn how to barricade their classroom doors with desks and chairs to keep a shooter from entering. It should outrage us that parents send their children to school every day afraid they may not come home. The crisis of school shootings is a uniquely American epidemic. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are commonsense solutions—such as universal background checks, extreme risk protection orders, and safe storage laws—that can prevent further tragedies like the one we saw yesterday in Georgia. But to make change happen, we must elect leaders who put our safety over gun lobby profits. Today marks two months until Election Day. That means we have two months left to make sure we maintain our slim gun safety majority in the Senate, take back the House of Representatives, and make sure that we elect Kamala Harris, a proven gun safety champion, as our next president.
