Today’s tragedy in Georgia

The perpetrator killed two students and two teachers, and at least nine more people have been injured. Instead of gathering in group discussions on their summer reading or playing a game of kickball in gym class, Apalachee High School students were escorted out of the building by law enforcement. Some prayed together on the school football field, hoping their friends weren’t among those killed or injured by the shooter roaming their school hallways. Instead of spending the day at work, parents dropped everything and rushed to the school, unsure if they would be reunited with their child. This is the horrifying reality of back-to-school season in America, {NAME}. This isn't freedom—freedom is knowing your kids can live safe from gun violence. My heart goes out to those killed and injured today, their families, and the entire Winder community that will feel the impact and trauma of this shooting for years to come. I am devastated and angered by this tragedy. But I also feel determined because I know it doesn’t have to be this way. In just over 60 days, we have an opportunity to elect a gun safety majority in Congress that can help build on our progress. But we must work together to make this happen. Our leaders can choose to act and pass commonsense gun safety legislation that can prevent shootings like these from happening. This is especially true for Georgia, which does not have universal background checks, extreme risk protection orders, assault weapon restrictions, a large capacity magazine ban, or waiting periods for gun purchases in place. Our children deserve the freedom to live safe from gun violence. I will not rest until that vision for our country becomes a reality. Please, keep standing with me in this fight.
