Yet today, Trump announced Ohio Senator JD Vance as his vice presidential pick, who has shown in the Senate that he will put gun industry profits over the safety of the American people. We know we’ve already told you a bit about Trump’s record on guns, but here’s a little refresher: - During Trump’s first term as president, gun homicides spiked by 34 percent. - He has the NRA’s full endorsement, and at an NRA event in February he bragged that his administration “did nothing” on guns. - Trump has explicitly stated that if he wins this November, he will fire our current ATF Director at noon on his Inauguration Day. - Trump wants to repeal the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and re-open deadly loopholes in our gun laws. Now, let’s talk a little bit about JD’s record: - Vance opposes universal background checks. - Like Trump, Vance is also backed by the NRA. - Vance supports concealed carry reciprocity. In states that have weakened standards for concealed carry, violent crime rates rose by 13-15 percent. - When the Senate tried to reinstate a federal bump stock ban after the Supreme Court struck down the ATF’s ban, Vance called bump stocks “fake problems.” Bump stocks have been used in some of the most fatal mass shootings in modern history, such as the 2017 shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas.
