Now, 21 families will never be whole again. Nineteen fourth graders will never have the chance to grow up and those who survived will face a lifetime of recovery. We must never forget the innocent victims whose lives and futures were stolen from them. Last fall, I had the opportunity to visit Uvalde and meet with many of the families. It was an emotional day as we honored the victims and survivors of this unspeakable tragedy. Since Governor Greg Abbott took office, gun deaths have increased more than 60 percent. This is unacceptable, and it’s why we just launched GIFFORDS Texas. With this new initiative, we will take on the gun lobby and work with local advocates and policymakers to reverse the state’s worsening gun violence epidemic. GIFFORDS Texas will engage communities across the state who have been impacted by gun violence, including Latinos, survivors, gun owners, and youth. The program will also dedicate resources towards a robust multi-year advocacy plan to shape common sense gun safety policy that better reflects the priorities of Texans. With our continued efforts, I truly believe we can make our country a safer place. We can be a nation where children and teachers don’t fear for their lives when they go to school.
