Each time we release our scorecard, we prove the same thing: strong gun laws save lives. For example, California received an A grade on the 2023 scorecard and is ranked as the state with the strongest gun laws in the nation. That’s because the state has taken initiative and passed 118 gun safety laws since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Meanwhile, Wyoming, which ranked 50th in the strength of its gun laws on the 2023 scorecard, has passed just two gun safety laws since the Sandy Hook shooting. In 2023, Wyoming had 20.6 gun deaths per 100,000 people, in comparison to California’s 8.7 gun deaths per 100,000 people.
