This legislation was passed in response to the US Supreme Court’s decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, which weakened the standards that states like Colorado use to decide who can carry guns in public. Unfortunately, Colorado is no stranger to the impacts of gun violence. Over the years, we’ve seen mass shootings tear apart communities in Boulder, Colorado Springs, Aurora, and Littleton. In the GIFFORDS Law Center scorecard released earlier this year, prohibiting guns from polling places and other sensitive areas was identified as a key way to better protect Coloradans from gun violence. We’re proud the Colorado Senate agreed that these recommendations would have a meaningful impact on public safety.
