Man, 1914 was a rough year... but THIS was one of the bright spotsâÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â â Hey Marilyn - it's Uncle Tommy...
As you probably know by now, I'm a little bit of a history buff.
Â
I love learning all kinds of interesting facts and stories about things before my time (and hey, let's be honest, that was a LONG time ago man!)
Â
And believe it or not, one of my favorite Christmas stories from history happened during WWI.
Â
Now, while I have great respect and gratitude for our military men & women, I despise war.
Â
Good folks fighting each other and dying (usually for the gain of a bunch of politicians or CEOs)... the pain and heartache... man, it's almost never the right path.
Â
Just change the circumstances a little bit, and the people in the other uniforms could be your neighbor!
Â
We're all just people, man.
Â
And that's why the story of the Christmas Truce of 1914 always brings a tear to my eye.
Â
I won't share all the details (I'm no journalist!), but if you want to read about it, [here's a great article from the History Channel that breaks it all down](.
Â
Just as a taste though, here's my "too long, didn't read" version.
Â
1914 was the beginning of WWI, one of the darkest times the world has ever seen man. (And it was only going to get darker for the next few years, unfortunately...)
Â
You've got soldiers on both sides freezing in the trenches and being killed left and right... absolutely terrible conditions.
Â
Then man, something unbelievable happened on Christmas Eve.
Â
Soldiers on both sides starting singing Christmas carols - together!
Â
These men, bitter enemies, were singing with each other from their trenches (how's that for the power of music??)
Â
And on Christmas Day, they did something even crazier â they met in No Man's Land, shared gifts, showed pictures of loved ones, cut each other's hair, and some even played soccer together!
Â
If it seems too unbelievable to be true... you're wrong! Just read some of the accounts if you don't believe me.
Â
For me, it's such a great reminder of why this season is so important, man.
Â
If most of the year we're bickering and fighting, Christmas is a season that has the power to bring us together.
Â
And who knows, if they'd had some [Cruise Chews]( to share, I bet that ol' truce might have lasted a little bit longer!
Â
Have you heard of this story before?
Â
Know any other interesting or moving Christmas events from history? I'd love to hear from you - just hit reply and let me know.
Â
Keep on keepin' on,
Â
