You ever get that feeling when the breeze shifts, and you think, "Ah, autumn's here"... And then someone tells you, "Nope, it's still summer"? Yeah, me too. In fact, it's already happened a couple of times this month... Now, I've been around for quite a few spins on this Earth, and I've always thought I had a good grip on when the seasons change. But man, turns out I was a little off. Here's the deal: Apparently this year (2023 in case you're wondering), the official start of the fall season is today, Sept. 23. They call it the "autumn equinox" but calling it that makes me feel like I need to break out some incense and a book of spells.. right? But honest-to-God, I thought the first day of fall was yesterday, the 22nd (and really, thought I was pretty smart for knowing that fact to begin with). To make matters worse, when I looked it up, I guess weather forecasters use Sept. 1 as the start of autumn, all based on the actual weather... (They got this system of "meteorological seasons," where each lasts three full months starting on the first of the month.) I told Cheech about all of this yesterday, and he just laughed and said, "Man, I just wait for the leaves to change." You know, I think I like that better too. (though, judging by the palm trees outside my office window, it ain't never been fall here in LA...) Anyways, speaking of change and cooler weather, last week I emailed asking about your favorite fall activities, especially those to do with apples. And man, you cousins didn't disappoint. Apple recipe. Boiled apple - Take some apples, cut and peel, put them in a saucepan with water halfway. Add cinnamon to taste, cook for about 10 minutes. It’s just...delicious. -Elizabeth G. Boiled apples with cinnamon? Name a better pair! This is going to be one for this year's rotation, Elizabeth. Is that where the carved apple pipe came from? Loved making & using those, and then eating the apple! I also had a beautiful little orchard in Eastern Arizona; I made a lot of apple sauce and (my favorite) caramel apples... although these days I'm sure my teeth wouldn't hold up too well to those... have to stick with the sauce 😁 -Judith K. I feel you on the caramel apples, Judith; used to love em, but those things are like candy-coated cement nowadays to me too. My grandmother’s apple dumplings. My mother died at age 106… so this is an old recipe! Drying apple slices hung in my kitchen window 🍎 -Jacque G. Man, 106?? Sounds like you've got some good genes, Jacque ;) And finally, cousin Jack sent an amazing note that I thought I'd close with today: Hey Tommy👋 I just want to say thank you for this letter! You hit the nail on the head! Everyone is rushing around doing this and that but not enjoying the "this"! It just passes right by, and by the time you realize it you've already forgotten what went by! I hate it when that happens🙃! Slow down and look around and enjoy life because before you know it you're old. Wondering where it all went! Peace out you all. -Jack P. Jack, you hit it right on the head, man. As the leaves start turning and that familiar chill enters the air, let's all remember to soak in the moments. Whether you're picking apples, sipping on some hot cider, or just watching the world do it's thing, take a breath and enjoy.
