Some citizenship test questions had me scratching my head...âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ âÍ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â â Hey Marilyn â it's Uncle Tommy... Taking the US citizenship test was one of the wilder experiences of my life, man. I mean, they hit you with questions that most folks born here would trip up on! Let me tell you, there were times I was tempted to respond with, âCome on, man! I just want to live here, not run for president!â Fun Fact: Uncle Tommy can't run for President, but NOT because I'm a felon... Believe it or not, naturalized citizens like yours truly are constitutionally barred from being elected President (which, honestly, I'm fine with...) But FELONS aren't! Yep, there's nothing in the U.S. Constitution that says a criminal can't be President... (Which, honestly, explains some things...) Trust me, I passed the test! Here's a few of my favorite zingers they asked before letting your Uncle Tommy stay in this great country: What is the supreme law of the land? Sounds like something I might've accidentally broken a few times, huh? Kidding! Well, I always thought it was âTreat others how youâd like to be treatedâ, but they were looking for 'The Constitution'. Close enough, right? Who was President during the Great Depression and World War II? That'd be FDR, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Dude had to steer the ship during some wild waves. Can you imagine being president during all that? Pass the joint, man... Who is the Chief Justice of the United States now? Wait, did I forget to send him a Christmas card? Last I checked it was John Roberts. But between you and me, I was hoping for Judge Judy. (When I actually took the test, it was Rehnquist... Can't believe I still remember that all these years later... Didn't even Google it!) How many justices are on the Supreme Court? I was thinking, "Depends on how you define 'justice', man." But I guess the correct answer is 9. Enough to field a baseball team, if they ever wanted a change of pace! And my personal favorite: What are the three branches of government? That's right... "liars, thieves, and cheats!" I kid, I kid - it's the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. But my answer's a close second, donât you think? Now, you might be thinking "Tommy, those questions aren't so hard, we took social studies in school"... but how 'bout this one: Name one of the two longest rivers in the United States. Now, wait just a damn minute, but why is Geography included in this? How is that fair? I live in California, over 2,000 miles from the Mississippi River (one of the possible right answers, btw.)... Am I applying to be an American, or to be Mark Twain? (though I AM starting to look like him these days...) And how bout this doozy. Without looking it up, be honest if you would get this one right: When was the Constitution written? In your brain, you're thinking 1776 right now, aren't you? But that's the Declaration of Independence. The Constitution wasn't until 1787... How many people remember that year? 1 out of 10? 1 out of 50? Oh, and it didn't become the law until 1788... (Now you know...) For real though, these questions make you think. But at the end of it all, it was worth every chuckle, head scratch, and "huh?" moment. Because after the ordeal, I got to call this great country home (permanently). And what a journey it's been!
