I mean, who wouldn't love these little guys? They're slow, steady, and could teach us a thing or two about home security – their home is their fortress! What's more impressive is their longevity though. Some of these dudes can live for more than 150 years. That's even more than me, man! (I mean, with modern medical science, and my high level of income... who knows, but I'm not betting on another 65 years...) But what I've come to appreciate most about our hearty homed friends is their role in maintaining ecological balance. (That's right! Turtles have a job... who knew?) Mother Nature sure knew what she was doing when she designed these guys. Basically, turtles are like nature's janitors... They keep our beaches clean by munching on dead fish that wash up on the shore. (Imagine what our favorite sunbathing spots would smell like without them... ooh boy!) They're also pretty skilled architects, digging holes in the sand and dirt that become homes for other creatures. They're like Jimmy Carter, building homes for the needy wherever they go... And let's not forget their symbolic meanings. They're associated with wisdom, longevity, and perseverance. (Or, if you're my kids, with pizza, attitude and ninjitsu...) Man, there's just so much to admire about these gentle creatures. Now, don't confuse your turtles with your tortoises. Though they're similar, tortoises are the ones with the domed shell, living up to 300 years, hanging out in grasslands and jungles. Turtles are the cool cats of the sea. We've got to work hard to prevent these wonderful creatures from becoming endangered. Organizations like the American Tortoise Rescue are doing a great job, so do check them out! Meanwhile, remember to cast your vote for our Bowlmates mascot. To vote, you need to be a [Bowlmates]( member.
