Boy, you guys really liked my tip about laying off the Kraft singles in the last email... But I think you liked the tidbits about some of the oldest living people even better! In fact, some of you even told me you plan to beat those "oldest person alive" records and man, Iâm rootinâ for ya! I donât want to be the only old hippie still kickinâ it into my 120s--Iâm gonna need some friends! So Iâm glad youâre game. Anyway, we'll keep this one a little shorter today, because Shelby and I are going to be seeing the grandkids. Which brings me to Uncle Tommyâs Tips for Good Livinâ #4... Are you ready for it? Get connected! "What does that mean, man?" you might be asking. What I'm talking about is to do your best to put time and effort into your relationships--friends, family, coworkers, spouse, neighbors, and your larger community. You know, it's so easy to start losing touch with the folks you care about as you get older. It's happened to me countless times throughout my life. But here's what I've realized about this whole connection thing... Usually, we have to be the ones to reach out and make sure we stay connected, ya dig? There's this saying I heard once that's stuck with me: "it only takes one person to change a relationship for the better". That idea has helped me a lot through the years, whether it was keeping in touch with old friends, or even settling a fight or old grudge. Do you have any idea how many friend spats (big and small) me and Cheech had? Let me tell ya...putting 2 creatives together and their big egos and then trying to make money ain't all sunshine and bongs. We even didnât talk to each other for a few years. But we patched it up and now weâre in business together again and man, I am so grateful to have my old friend and business partner still in my life. Iâm also grateful for my big family AND all my friends--itâs important to me to keep these relationships going so I make sure to reach out to people and make plans and stuff like that. People need people and studies show that we live longer when we feel connected. Think about it.... I feel like everyone has known at least one person who seemed super young and vibrant and full of life... right up to the moment they retired... Then BAM, dead within a year! (Sometimes less than a month, or even a week!) And I've heard over and over again that it was the loss of "purpose" that suddenly took the wind out of their sails... But what if it was the loss of seeing all those people we all pretend not to care about every day? I dunno know about you, but I'm hedging my bets by NEVER retiring! They're gonna have to carry me off the stage (or from behind this keyboard) on a stretcher! Mark my words. I love the work, and the people I get to work with too much to ever throw in this particular towel. So I hope you have some good people in your life, and if you could use more fun---get out and do stuff! Get involved in your community, go to church, whatever floats your boat. Youâll meet people and make connections and thatâs good for ya! OK, that one felt a bit more preachy than some of the others, but I just hate the idea of anyone growing old alone. Unless youâre a recluse and want to be alone, in which case I hope you have some great hobbies you love. Alright, remember our GOODLIVING sale is still going on.
