Ever have one of those memories that feel like yesterday, even though decades have passed? The kind where every time you think of it, a little grin creeps across your face? Well, even though your Uncle Tommy's short-term memory isn't always the greatest (I'll let you guess why...) I still remember some of those wild moments from the old days pretty vividly. Anyway, I bring it up because the other day, I was laughing with Cheech about the old bit we used to do called "The Dogs" ([here's a video of us doing it live]( In my opinion, that was one of our all-time best routines, man. In fact it was so good... it actually got me and Cheech arrested for performing it (which is where the core memory comes in). Here's the story in a nutshell. Me and Cheech were doing a show at a place called Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa... This was back in 1973 (and the entertainment business was a little different back then...) We were still a few years away from "Up in Smoke", but our stage shows were drawing some pretty big crowds... And of course, our fans were also mostly the kind of folks who weren't too big on rules and following authority (I wouldn't have had it any other way, man). Well back in the 70's, Tampa was still a pretty "old school" place - quite a lot of pearl clutching around decorum and "decency". And Curtis Hixon Hall had this policy where they actually required a $5,000 performance bond from performers who came in to town. I think what was going on, was that they'd invite performers known for, well, colorful performances, in hopes that they'd have grounds to scoop up that deposit because of some "vulgar or indecent language" or something like that. Well... when Cheech and I went there, we certainly got our money's worth! Because of course, the cornerstone of our act that day was "The Dogs." [The Dogs]( Two grown men on all fours sniffing...well, you get the idea if you watched the video up above... that would have probably been enough by itself for them to sneak that five grand from us. But what really pushed us over the edge? Cheech decided to pick up a real active duty cop's hat using his teeth and then acted like he was "marking his territory" right on the cop's HEAD. Funny? Absolutely... a good idea? No. No it wasn't. I'll give you a second to laugh at that visual. Done? Well – that particular cop didn't find it nearly as funny as you did. So, after our show, they strolled back stage, easy as you please to have a word with us. Honestly, we thought they were coming in for autographs... (and some of them WERE) But the other thing they decided to do was arrest us for indecency. (Imagine...) Of course, this is me and Cheech in the 70's we're talking about. So on the way to jail, we were still in show mode - cracking jokes, and even having a blast even while getting our mug shots taken. (While a couple of the guys in our crew snuck out the back with the evidence of the "other" laws we might have been breaking in the lovely city by the bay...) But when we got to the cell, things got a bit more real, man. After an hour or two, one of the officers came back and pulled Cheech out of the cell, leaving me behind. I still remember hearing Cheech "sober up" real fast and tell the guy "You know, my dad's a cop... LAPD! 25 Years!" on his way down the hall. Later on, we found out the cops were just trying to separate us because we were having too much fun (this is supposed to be jail after all)! In the end, we paid a fine, posted bail (and forfeited that "performance bond" OUCH!), plus the venue stiffed us on our fee... But all in all, we chalked it up as a learning experience... Not to clean up our act or anything... (why would we?) But we learned not to play Tampa anymore... I don't know about you, but writing this stuff down helps me "savor" those old moments more. It's funny how much you forget about until you really dig it up and dust off the memories like this. Thanks as always for humoring me, man. Keep on keepin' on, Peace and love, [Tommy Signature] Tommy Chong P.S. Did any of you have a chance to see me and Cheech do "The Dogs" live?
