As timing is key, Neumann recommends applying fertilizer after the first hard frost. “By providing small amounts of nutrients that aid in supporting healthy plant functions as plants enter dormancy, woody plants have an opportunity to utilize nutrients for disease prevention and root expansion," Neumann said. “Leftover nutrients are stored in the roots, providing extra support in Spring as plants wake up.” New plantings do NOT need fertilizer. “Azomite is a beneficial mineral supplement that can also be used in Fall,” said Phelan Gardens Owner Monica Phelan. If you’ve been wanting to add shrubs, trees or perennials to your yard, take advantage of the cooler planting temps and sale prices that this time of year brings. ALL hardy plants will be 30% off at Phelan’s Backyard Harvest Fest, September 21 & 22, with select shrubs and trees on sale prior.
