Most people don't know this... But the primary job of good copywriting is to get people to read the first sentence. Then, the first sentence's job is to get people to read the second sentence. And then, the second sentence's job is to read the third. You catch my drift. So here's a question for you: Does this 6th sentence do its job properly? I don't know... You tell me. You're still reading this email... Soooo it seems like -- so far -- my copy is working. You see, {NAME}... ​ Powerful copy works kind of like a slippery slope ​ You start at the top... And once you get going, you slide aaaaaall the way to the bottom. There is no stopping in the middle. Gravity -- just like persuasive copy -- pulls you further and further... Until you reach the end of the slide. (Which, in the case of an email, is your final Call to Action) So at the end of the day... Your job as a copywriter is to get people to read your stuff line-by-line... until they reach the place where you ask them to do something. That's it, in a nutshell. (Thank you for your attention, it was a great lesson. Have a great day!) ........ ...... .... ... .. . . . . . . . Unfortunately, though... There's a BIG problem you have to deal with! Something every single writer -- no matter the industry -- HATES. Are you ready for it? ​ People are actively looking for a reason to close your email/page and do something else ​ This is true for Facebook Ads... Landing pages... Sales pages... Video sales letters... you name it! The result? According to Campaign Monitor, the industry average for email click-through rates in 2022 was 1.25%. 1.25%! That means for every 100 people on a given email list, less than 2 people actually clicked on the link of whatever that email was promoting. The rest either did nothing... or didn't even open the email. That's crazy! And you know what's even crazier? The same trend is true for pretty much every single marketing channel nowadays... Facebook Ads, landing pages, sales pages, video sales letters... they all have abysmal click-through rates. But let's be honest for a minute... Are you REALLY that surprised about this, {NAME}? You probably know first-hand how much crap typical online marketers are sending you... Thinking like you're some kind of moron. OF COURSE people ignore 95%+ of these low-quality messages! ​ Nobody likes reading copy that's boring, all hyped up, and full of fluff! ​ Because when people encounter copy like that, their default setting is to do NOTHING. (even if they like your stuff!) So how do you fix this? Simple... You make sure your copy hits HARD where it needs to... while creating a real emotional connection with your reader. Here's the thing: Your job is to understand the pains, fear, hopes, and dreams of your subscribers, customers, and prospects so well... They'll feel like YOUR solution is the best and ONLY way to make their dreams come true. And wanna know the most surprising part? You don't have to be a writer, expert marketer, funnel hacker, or "ninja guru" (whatever that means) to make this happen. You just have to know what your audience really wants and give it to them. As the late, great Eugene Schwartz used to say: "Let’s get to the heart of the matter. The power, the force, the overwhelming urge to own that makes advertising work, comes from the market itself, and not from the copy. Copy cannot create desire for a product. It can only take the hopes, dreams, fears, and desires that already exists in the hearts of millions of people... and focus those already existing desires onto a particular product. This is the copy writer’s task: not to create this mass desire – but to channel and direct it.” Remember that... because it's really important. ​ Discover the pains, fears, hopes, and dreams of your ideal customer... and channel THEIR desires onto YOUR solution ​ That's it. Of course, this isn't always easy. Great copywriters charge fat stacks of cash precisely because they have what it takes to discover what a given market really wants... ...and give it to them in a way that they'll find persuasive. So look, {NAME}... I could go on and on and on about "proven copywriting formulas"... "Advanced persuasion tactics"... Or "deep psychological triggers"... But I'm not gonna do that right now. Instead, here are 4 email copywriting fundamentals I consider essential: === 1️⃣ Don't just write copy based on what "sounds nice". Write it based on actual customer research 2️⃣ Write based on how your audience talks, in plain English, and don't try to sound "clever" or "marketese" 3️⃣ Write each email as if you were talking face-to-face with a single reader, in 2nd person, using a conversational language 4️⃣ Don't be afraid to use powerful, surprising, or insightful stories to hook your reader emotionally === Again...
