Just issues, news, and other stuff that matters to you [Fusion] July 26, 2016 ‘When they go low, we go high.’ Michelle Obama shared one of her mottos as America’s first black FLOTUS during her[powerful speech] at the Democratic National Convention last night. Sure, the quote was ostensibly about the Democratic party and a[jab] at Donald Trump and the GOP, but it also defines much of Michelle’s legacy as a first lady. Back in 2009, FLOTUS was [criticized] for wearing a dress that showed her toned arms in her official first lady photo. She didn’t cave in by covering up. Instead, Michelle continues to bare her arms and has even shared her [full-body workout]. When[confronted] by a protester while giving a speech, she didn’t get mad. She calmly de-escalated, something she has had to do as a prominent black woman lest she be accused of being “[too loud or too angry or too emasculating].” While delivering a commencement speech last year at a historically black college, Michelle [addressed] how it felt to hear how people might talk about her as a black woman while her husband was on the campaign trail. To watch how Michelle has risen above criticism that was meant to make her feel inferior for these past seven years should serve as an example to us all. In honor of her unapologetic ways, here’s “[Sorry],” by Beyoncé. —[Darian Symoné Harvin] TODAY IN... ROOTS Only hours after he told Dems #ImWithHer, Bernie Sanders announced he would be [returning to the Senate] as an Independent. ‘BLACKIFY’ THE NARRATIVE Black immigrants are [detained and deported] at a higher rate than the rest of the undocumented immigrant community. AFTERMATH Two months after the mass shooting at Orlando's LGBTQ nightclub Pulse, MTV will air a special episode of "True Life" that checks in on [four survivors of the tragedy]. CLOSE READINGS What Ghostbusters Halloween costumes [can teach us] about the way fans of all ages, genders, races, and sizes relate to the movie. STUDY IN CONTRASTS We counted the women and people of color at the RNC and DNC, and saw [two distinct versions] of America: its past and future. SWEEPSTAKES It’s wine time! Fusion and a few others have teamed up to [send you] on a wine escape. [Enter here]. THE READ [What Justin Bieber's New Male Fans Tell Us About the Modern Man] by Alana Hope Levinson The boys are up in the nosebleeds when Gabe gets a phone call. He gestures to Sam and Will, and the three men start to mobilize as if they are summoned by God. Something about getting into a suite. Apparently, Girls of Interest are there. Ja Rule is allegedly also present. Most importantly: Justin Bieber will be closer. The show is about to start at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but they decide to risk it. Suddenly, they are running, and I’m behind them. All three are generic-looking white guys wearing exclusive Purpose Tour t-shirts, which they got in advance from a pop-up shop in SoHo. “You didn’t know about the pop-up shop?” Will asks in disbelief after I admit to not having heard of it. “And you call yourself a fan,” Sam chides flirtatiously. As a female reporter, it’s common for men I interview to interrogate my qualifications. I just never imagined I’d one day be in a dick-measuring contest with straight guys in their twenties over [Justin Bieber]. [Read more] LET’S TALK ABOUT CRAZES If we can stomach it, cockroach milk may be the next big thing in [health food]. COMING UP Wednesday, 9 PM ET: Tomorrow on Hot Line, Fusion’s weekly [Facebook] call-in show on sex, love, and dating, host Cleo Stiller will ask listeners how this election is impacting their sex life. Couples, daters, and the anxiety-ridden can call in to discuss. Correction: In yesterday’s newsletter we said two pilots had completed the first leg of their journey around the world in a solar airplane. They had [completed] the last leg. We regret the error.
