Just issues, news, and other stuff that matters to you [Fusion] June 14, 2016 Hey everyone. I’m Darian. I’m a journalist and [podcaster]. I like [Beyoncé concerts], traveling, and space on the subway. You’ll be hearing from me, Monday through Friday. And I have to admit—I wasn’t expecting to start the week in such sobriety. As in, sadness. I spent my morning at the [United State of Women], a summit organized by the White House. I heard Mariska Hargitay ("Law and Order"), Matt McGorry (you know, "[Activist/Woke Bae]"), Vice President Biden, and even President Obama condemn violence and sexual assault against women, in the same room. Yet it was [Bamby Salcedo], president and CEO of the TransLatin@ Coalition, whose words are still ringing in my ears. As she took the stage in the not-so-distant backdrop of the Orlando shooting, I could not ignore the urgency in her voice to protect and uplift transgender women and the LGBTQ community. It was a good reminder of things that shouldn’t be forgotten in our fury to cover this tragedy. —[Darian Symoné Harvin] THE LIST 1 Samantha Bee Expresses the Rage Some of Us Can't The comedian and talkshow host told us how she really feels about the Orlando shooting on her show "Full Frontal." "Love does not win unless we start loving each other enough to fix our f**cking problems," she said. [It's hitting a nerve]. 2 A Gay Conservative Group On the Orlando Shooting Over 50 LGBTQ and civil rights groups signed a joint statement showing their solidarity with the Muslim community following Sunday's shooting. However, one gay conservative group decided to [stick to the party line]. 3 Do Gun Companies Profit off Mass Shootings? Gun manufacturer stocks typically rise after mass shootings, and Orlando was no exception. As a matter of fact, gunmakers' stocks have risen since President Obama's re-election. [Fusion's Rob Wile explains why]. 4 Male? Female? Non-binary. In Oregon, a transgender person now has the right to choose "non-binary" as their gender. The historic ruling could affect the way other transgender people who identify as non-binary fight for more options on [identification documents]. 5 Straight, White Actor and Singer Spoke at a Vigil for Orlando Former Jonas Brothers band member Nick Jonas has been questioned about his tendency to "[gay bait]." So when he spoke at a vigil in New York City Monday night, some [tilted their heads] in confusion. THE READ [Orlando, Race, and the Meaning of Terror] by Terrell Jermaine Starr One thing is clear about American politics in light of the massacre in Orlando: Muslims who commit mass acts of violence are easily and immediately deemed terrorists. White people who do the same thing are not. The mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub revealed the subtle biases in the language that public officials use to define terror and who is eligible to perpetrate it. It was a matter of hours on Sunday before local authorities and national politicians began labeling Omar Mateen, the gunman, an Islamic terrorist. In some cases the label was applied even before law enforcement officials began telling reporters that Mateen had pledged allegiance to ISIS during the attack. His Muslim name and Afghan ethnicity were enough to make that call. [Read more] TODAY'S INFOGRAPHIC We looked at what nearly all mass shooters have in common.
