While she was Secretary of State from 2007 to 2010, Handel purged voter rolls, blocked Democratic candidates from running, and supported strict voter-ID laws. Even worse, her attempted purging of the voter rolls just weeks before the 2008 election was illegal, and caused the ACLU to sue the state of Georgia on the affected voters’ behalf. We simply cannot allow an architect of voter suppression like Karen Handel to get back in power in Congress, where we need to strengthen the Voting Rights Act and protections for voters -- not roll them back. [Can you chip in to our campaign right now to make sure we defeat her again in 2020?]( If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: [$10]( [$20]( [$50]( [$100]( [$250]( [Other]( In the suit brought against her by the ACLU, Handel was rebuked by three Republican-appointed judges, who ordered her to “reasonably ensure that no voter is permanently deleted from the voter registration list.” Despite the court victory, Handel still forced thousands of affected voters to cast a “challenge” ballot at the polls in 2008. At the time, my friend and colleague Congressman John Lewis called it “an attempt to take us back to a dark period in our history where people were denied access to the ballot box simply because of their race.” It is entirely clear that we cannot trust Karen Handel when it comes to voter suppression. She shouldn’t be allowed to make decisions about voting in Washington, Atlanta, or anywhere else. [So will you make a grassroots contribution to our campaign right now to ensure we keep her on the sidelines in 2020?]( Thanks for all of your support, I wouldn’t have been able to unseat Karen Handel in 2018 without you on my side, and together we’re going to do it again in 2020.
