Seven years ago today, 26 other families in Newtown, CT joined a club that nobody wants to join when the Sandy Hook school shooting tragically took place. Sandy Hook really marked a turning point for the gun safety movement that we have now built to the brink of success. At the time, I was reeling from the death of my son and in an extremely dark place, but even I felt extremely helpless in the aftermath. If our legislators couldn't find the courage to pass gun safety reform in the aftermath of Sandy Hook, where someone who never should have had his hands on a gun murdered twenty 1st grade children and six adult staff members, when was it going to realistically happen? Seven years later, I think a lot of us in this movement -- and a lot of Americans -- are still asking the same question. The question we've asked after Las Vegas, Pulse Nightclub, Parkland, and every mass shooting that makes headlines: If not now, when? Today, I'm solemnly remembering the children and adults we lost in the Sandy Hook shooting, their families are in my thoughts and prayers. And I'm more committed than ever before to winning our gun safety fight. We will pass federal gun safety reform. We must. We simply can not wait any longer. Not another year. Not another seven years.
