{NAME} -- Today, you’re probably getting a lot of “thanks for helping me hit our end-of-quarter goal” type emails, but October 1st is no longer a normal day in the fight for gun safety. Two years ago today, a lone gunman with modified assault weapons killed 58 people, wounded 422, and the ensuing panic brought the injury total to 851. The gunman had a cache of 24 weapons, was able to fire over 1,000 rounds during a 10-minute shooting spree. It was the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States, and Congress did almost nothing in response. Today, the families and survivors of the Las Vegas shooting are in our hearts, our minds, and yes... our thoughts and our prayers. In fact, 'thoughts and prayers' were about all we got from Congress in the aftermath. The Justice Department (of President Trump's executive branch) had to step up and ban bump stocks -- and that was a largely symbolic response. Las Vegas and the lack of a federal response was just another example of how most Washington politicians and their NRA talking points are often so out of touch -- that's why we call our movement a fight for "common-sense gun safety." My son's shooting, Las Vegas, Parkland -- each of these tragedies was a push for me -- an opportunity to stand up and speak out. Why were our legislators in the nation's capital doing NOTHING? Two years after Las Vegas, I'm a member of Congress representing all victims of gun violence and their families -- and more importantly, their stories -- in Congress. I'm fighting for all of us every day to pass common-sense reforms, and I won't let you down in this fight.
