{NAME} -- we're just checking in to make sure you saw Lucy's note (copied below) on Georgia's abortion ban that was signed into law yesterday. It was a sad day for the State of Georgia, where we already have the highest maternal mortality rate in the country -- especially among black women. And in a state where half of our counties simply have no OBGYN. Unfortunately, we're sure that Lucy's opponents are busy celebrating the abortion ban... After all, former Rep. Karen Handel has a long and storied anti-choice history, and State Senator Brandon Beach was actually on the record -- voting for the "Heartbeat Bill" to pass. These are the stakes in Georgia's 6th District, {NAME}: We can keep a fierce pro-choice fighter like Lucy in Congress, or Handel or Beach can take our seat back and continue to try and impose their anti-choice views. [Can you help us seize this critical moment and chip in to make sure we keep a strong pro-choice advocate like Lucy in Congress, and fighting against Georgia's abortion ban?]( If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: [Express Donate: $6]( [Express Donate: $10]( [Express Donate: $25]( [Express Donate: $50]( [Express Donate: $100]( [Or, donate another amount]( Thanks for having Lucy's back while she fights for all of us in Georgia, and in Washington. -- Team Lucy [DONATE]( ~~~ fowarded message ~~~ {NAME} -- Today is non-stop meetings and a quick appearance on CNN (more on that later), but I wanted to drop you a note about some really bad news coming out of Georgia while I had a chance. Unfortunately, we saw this one coming. This morning with the stroke of his pen, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed HB 481 (The "Heartbeat Bill") into law, effectively banning abortion for women in Georgia. {NAME} -- this legislation isn't permanent, and we won't go down without a fight. Fortunately, the next step is to challenge this unconstitutional bill in the courts. And I promise you that I will be along for the ride, fighting together with pro-choice advocates to make sure this bill is struck down by a judge. This abortion ban is wrong for women, wrong for families, and wrong for Georgia. Elections have consequences. And your vote matters. {NAME}, there's some good news and some bad news about the next steps here: The good news is that legal challenges to similar bills have already prevailed in other states. The bad news is really bad, though. Republicans in the Georgia State Legislature knew this bill would go to the courts. That's actually been their plan all along... By appealing "Heartbeat" bills being struck down as unconstitutional in several states, Republicans are hoping to bubble this legislation up all the way to the Supreme Court, so that Brett Kavanaugh and his colleagues can eventually have the opportunity to reverse 46 years of Roe v. Wade. That's why this fight matters in Georgia, and why it matters everywhere else; In Iowa, North Dakota, and Arkansas where judges have struck down similar bills; and in Mississippi, Ohio, Kentucky, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina where "heartbeat" bills have been introduced and passed in 2019. I hope you'll join me in doing everything you can to protect a woman's right to choose. Roe v. Wade is still the law of the land. Let's keep it that way, shall we?
