I have a rule to never sign a deal that includes royalties with a client — unless it passes

I have a rule to never sign a deal that includes royalties with a client — unless it passes one simple but important test.  This test has nothing to do with how much I trust the client, either. (Although trust is also important.)  Because too many things can still go wrong. Even with a client you have worked with for years.  Which is why I came up with this simple test:  First, I assume that my total royalties for the project will be $0.00.  Then I ask myself…  “Would I still take this deal?”  If the answer is yes, I move forward with the project.  Since it means no matter what, the project will be worth my time. Even if the copy never goes live. And I never make a penny in royalties.  (Plus I will also [protect myself by adding a kill fee](. That way, I get paid a modest amount if the client never runs my copy.)  On the other hand, if I would not take the deal after assuming my royalties will be $0.00, first I’ll try to negotiate for a better up-front fee that does make the project worth my time. Even if the royalties never pan out.  But if the client doesn't agree, then I will have to pass on the opportunity.  Because as a freelancer, your time is your biggest asset.  And if you want long-term success, you must first protect your downside. Which means never taking on projects where you risk working for low pay.  Then only after you’ve protected your downside, you can look for opportunities to make exponential upside.  And that’s a great time to consider charging royalties.  Until next week,  -Brian [Unsubscribe]( | [Edit your details]( Freelance Like A Pro PO Box 281 Bloomingdale New Jersey 07403 United States [Powered By Kartra] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
