Hey {NAME},  In my last email, I told you that I believe what happens over the next few weeks will determine if I succeed or fail this year.  And I have an important update for you today.  But first, in case you missed it, you can find [the text from last week’s email here](.  The short summary is that I see a lot of both bad and good signs in my business right now.  So the question is whether more of those bad signs will come true in the next few weeks. Or if more of the good ones will.  And for a while, it was feeling like a rollercoaster — swinging between the highs and lows of these good and bad signs.  But I’m happy to share that one of the positive signs took a major step forward last week.  First, I was able to reach an agreement on a new project with the 1 prospect I mentioned I still had in my pipeline. He has approved the contract and the deal terms. So now we just need to get the signatures in place.  And it gets even better when you find out about the terms of the deal.  That’s because the client agreed to a new kind of project I’m starting to test.  I’ve only done this type of project once before. But when I did, I was able to triple my average effective hourly rate. And instead of earning roughly $200 per hour for each hour I put into the project, I made closer to $600 instead.  So now I have a second opportunity to validate that this new type of project has the potential to give me a major boost in my earnings per hour. Plus it also helps me prove there is a market for this type of project.  And I’m still not done.  Because the icing on the cake is that I was also able to secure a generous royalty as part of the deal.  Now we did structure the up-front payment as an advance. So I won’t earn any additional royalty income until my share of the total revenue from the project exceeds the advance they paid me. Which is fine with me. Since it gives me skin in the game. And it shows that I’m invested in helping this project scale for the long term.  Plus there is yet another reason this new deal is a big shift in a positive direction.  See, earlier this year I shared that I’ve grown my business for a few years in a row — without signing a single new client.  Instead, I was able to achieve all my growth from ongoing retainers, royalties, and repeat clients.  But I also said that I was starting to worry that I was becoming too dependent on the same few companies. And that if anything happened to one (or more) of them, I would be in big trouble.  Which is why one of my other goals for this year was to [sign at least 1 completely new client]( that I have never worked with before.  And the new deal I'm about to close also checks that box.  So now you see why this deal is such a big step in a positive direction:  - It helps prove there is a market for a new type of project I’ve been working on - I should earn roughly 3 times more money for the time I spend on this project based on my previous test. (And it gives me another chance to validate that as well.) - I have a generous royalty that could pay major dividends in the future. Yet I also have almost no up-front risk. Since like I said, the advance alone should triple what I make for each hour I spend on this project. - And it allows me to bring a brand-new client onto my roster to help me diversify my income streams and mitigate the risk of relying on the same few clients for all my growth. So at this point, you’re probably wondering what this new type of project is that is going to allow me to triple my rate and earn a generous royalty.  Well sorry, but I’m not quite ready to share it with the public yet.  I want to test it with at least a few more clients first to make sure the numbers hold up.  But don’t worry.
