Bringing football back
Saturday, 3pm is an important cultural touchstone. We donât need to explain it. You know immediately what it is, and what it means.
It doesnât matter what your routine in the hours building up to 3 oâclock is: whether you drive, take the train, or the bus, or walk, or stagger from the pub. The only thing that matters is where you are at 3pm, when the whistle goes. For hundreds of thousands of people in this country, every single Saturday, that moment is exactly the same.
For the next few weeks, and probably months, weâve lost that.
Because of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, football wonât be on, and we should trying to stay inside as much as possible. Itâll hit a lot of people hard. Weekends will be much longer to fill, and that structured community aspect anchors a lot of our lives.
We canât replace that completely â but we can do our best.
On Saturday March 21, at 3pm (GMT), FourFourTwo will be watching the France 98 World Cup Final â and we want to watch it with you.
Weâll be livetweeting it using the hashtag #SaturdayFFT, and weâd love you to join in. Tweet along with us, take a photo of your home setup, video call your mates â letâs watch it together.
[Weâve embedded the video here, and will begin watching dead on 3pm Saturday.](
Itâs a classic game. France and Brazil, two iconic teams, spearheaded by two all-time greats in Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo, with two absolutely gorgeous kits. Then thereâs Roberto Carlos, Desailly, Cafu, Djorkaeff, Rivaldo, Barthez⦠And, of course, the stage: the brilliant Stade de France.
So get your friends involved, and letâs get our Saturdays back.
â Quiz Of The Week â
Can you name the top 20 all-time English scorers in the Premier League?
Darren Bent was a prolific striker in the Premier League. A rare combination of pace, strength and the accuracy of a marksman in the penalty area. On quiz shows? Not so much.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker appeared on Celebrity Mastermind last weekend, competing against the likes of Bez from the Happy Mondays and picking the James Bond franchise as his specialist subject.
But though he scored 217 goals in his career, Bent only got three questions correct all evening - and only one of those was in his specialist round.
To celebrate Bent's car crash quiz calamity, we're looking for some of England's most prolific - in front of goal though, not under the Mastermind spotlights.
It's okay, Darren. Maybe you'll ace this quiz, instead.
Five minutes on the clock, 20 players to try and guess - and we've even given you the Premier League clubs they played for. [Play it here now.](
